Chapter 9 - Caroline’s House

Emily made one unexpected request before the mansion was sold.
She asked the foundation’s trustees to purchase a smaller property outside the city and transform it into temporary housing for women rebuilding their lives after controlling or dangerous relationships.
Some trustees worried that the project was too personal.
Emily answered honestly.
“That is exactly why it matters.”
The proposal passed unanimously.
The new residence was named Caroline’s House.
Robert helped repair the building. He painted walls, replaced broken cabinets, and spent weekends assembling furniture. The foundation’s former accountant became its financial director after cooperating fully with investigators.
Emily visited every room before the opening.
There were twelve private bedrooms, a shared kitchen, a children’s reading room, and offices where residents could meet attorneys and counselors.
Near the front entrance, workers installed a security camera.
Emily stopped when she saw its small blue light.
For a moment, she was back at the mansion, hearing broken glass and Grant’s voice.
Robert noticed her hesitation.
“We can choose another system.”
Emily shook her head.
“No. Leave it.”
On opening day, a young mother arrived with two suitcases and a sleeping child. She looked nervous when Emily welcomed her.
“Do I need to explain everything tonight?” the woman asked.
“No,” Emily said. “Tonight, you only need to know that the door locks from the inside and no one here will take your phone.”
The woman’s shoulders relaxed.

Emily understood then that surviving Grant was not the ending of her story.
It was the beginning of what she could build afterward.
