Chapter 3 - The Hidden Archive

The mansion’s security system had been installed by Emily’s mother years before Grant moved into the house.

Caroline had believed every important system needed an independent backup. The doorbell camera, hallway cameras, and office sensors stored recordings locally, but they also uploaded encrypted copies to an external account.

Grant had replaced most of the equipment.

He had missed one device.

The original doorbell camera still belonged to Emily’s private account.

The following morning, Emily opened the security application. She had not used it in years. After several password attempts, the screen finally unlocked.

Hundreds of clips appeared.

Most showed deliveries, guests, and staff entering the mansion. Emily searched by date and listened to recordings from nights when Grant held private meetings.

The camera was outside, but the front office window often remained open. Voices carried across the porch.

One recording captured Grant discussing false invoices.

Another recorded Vivian instructing an employee to destroy original bank statements.

The clearest clip had been created six weeks earlier. Grant stood on the porch speaking to the accountant.

“If Emily questions the signatures, we’ll say her grief has affected her memory.”

“And if she contacts the trustees?” the accountant asked.

“She won’t. By then, the medical papers will be ready.”

Emily’s hands went cold.

She searched Grant’s office again that afternoon and found a sealed envelope hidden behind the bookshelves.

Inside was a statement signed by a private doctor claiming Emily suffered from severe confusion and could no longer manage her own financial affairs.

The statement was false.

Attached to it was a proposed court filing that would place Grant in control of all her personal and charitable assets.

Emily photographed every page.

She then uploaded the images into the security account and scheduled them to be shared with three recipients: the police financial crimes division, the foundation’s attorney, and Robert Hayes.

The files would be released when the doorbell camera detected a manual emergency signal.

Three rapid presses on the hidden button beneath its frame.

Before Emily could close the application, the office door opened.

Vivian stood there.

Her elegant smile disappeared when she saw the documents in Emily’s hands.

“You should not have found those.”
