Chapter 2 - The Lie Between Them

Robert Hayes had never trusted Grant.
He had tried to warn Emily before the wedding, but his concern sounded like disapproval. Grant used every disagreement to convince Emily that her father wanted to control her life.
After Caroline died, the conflict became worse.
Grant showed Emily a financial report suggesting Robert had attempted to remove money from her inheritance trust. Emily confronted her father during an emotional meeting.
Robert denied everything.
Grant arrived with copies of bank documents.
Emily believed her husband.
She told Robert she needed distance. Months passed. Calls went unanswered. Holiday invitations stopped arriving.
What Emily did not know was that Grant had created the financial report himself. The bank documents had been altered, and the supposed transfer request had never existed.
Robert continued investigating quietly.
He hired an independent forensic accountant, but without Emily’s cooperation, he could not access the foundation’s internal records. He sent letters, hoping she would eventually read them.
Grant intercepted every one.
The night of the charity dinner, Emily waited until she was alone in the bathroom and searched through old messages on her phone. She found her father’s last voicemail.
His voice sounded tired.
“I don’t need you to believe me today. I only need you to remember that you can call me, at any hour, for any reason.”
Emily listened twice.
Then she deleted the recent call history so Grant would not see what she had opened.
When she returned to the ballroom, Grant was waiting near the stairs.
“Where were you?”
“The bathroom.”
“For fifteen minutes?”
Emily forced herself to remain calm.
“I wasn’t feeling well.”
Grant studied her face. In public, his smile remained perfect.
“Then perhaps you should go upstairs.”
It sounded like a suggestion.
Emily knew it was an order.
As she walked away, she saw the accountant watching her from across the room. The woman touched two fingers to the folder beneath her arm, then looked toward the security camera above the front entrance.
Emily understood.

The records were not only in Grant’s office.
Something had been captured by the mansion’s cameras.
