Chapter 8 - The Truth About Robert
The investigation uncovered more than Emily expected.
Grant had stolen from the foundation through false construction contracts, consulting fees, and companies registered under relatives’ names. Vivian had helped create fake board resolutions and had pressured employees to remain silent.
The documents Grant showed Emily about Robert were also exposed as forgeries.
A forensic specialist compared the files with original bank records. Robert had never tried to take money from Emily’s inheritance.
He had tried to stop Grant from accessing it.
Emily read the report in her father’s kitchen several weeks later.
“I said terrible things to you,” she said.
Robert placed two cups of tea on the table.
“You believed the person you married.”
“I should have listened.”
“Grant made sure listening to me felt like betraying him. That was part of what he did.”
Emily looked around the modest kitchen. It was nothing like the mansion, but she felt safer there than she had felt in years.
“Why did you keep investigating after I told you to stay away?”
Robert sat across from her.
“Because staying away and giving up are not the same thing.”
Emily’s eyes filled with tears, but she smiled.
The legal process took months. Emily obtained a divorce, and the court issued protections preventing Grant or Vivian from contacting her.
Grant eventually admitted his role after investigators presented the recordings and financial trail. Vivian continued blaming everyone else, but her own recorded words destroyed her defense.
The stolen money was returned to the foundation.
The mansion, which had been maintained partly through fraudulent payments, was placed under legal control and prepared for sale.
