Chapter 1 - Three Days Earlier

Three days before the police surrounded the mansion, Emily Whitmore stood in the ballroom smiling for people she barely knew.

A charity dinner was being held in honor of her late mother, Caroline Hayes. Crystal glasses shone beneath golden chandeliers. Wealthy guests praised Grant for his generosity, while photographers captured Vivian standing proudly beside him.

Emily remained near the edge of the room.

The Caroline Hayes Foundation had been created ten years earlier to support emergency housing for women and children. Emily had inherited responsibility for the foundation after her mother’s death, but during the past two years, Grant had gradually taken control of nearly every decision.

At first, he had called it help.

Then it became supervision.

Finally, it became permission.

Emily could not approve a payment without Grant. She could not meet the accountants alone. Even her private emails were copied to Vivian.

That evening, Emily noticed the foundation’s chief accountant leaving Grant’s office with a pale face. When Emily asked whether something was wrong, the woman forced a smile.

“Just a problem with the quarterly records.”

“What kind of problem?”

Grant appeared before the accountant could answer.

“Nothing you need to worry about,” he said, placing a hand on Emily’s shoulder.

His fingers tightened slightly.

The accountant looked away.

Later, Emily slipped upstairs while Grant was giving a speech. She entered his office and found a folder left open beside the computer.

The first page contained her signature.

Emily stared at it.

She had never signed the document.

It authorized the transfer of nearly eight million dollars from the Caroline Hayes Foundation into three private investment companies. All three companies were connected to Grant.

Footsteps sounded in the hallway.

Emily quickly photographed the pages with her phone and closed the folder.

As she turned toward the door, she heard Vivian’s voice outside.

“Once the final transfer is complete, Emily won’t have enough control left to stop us.”

Grant answered quietly.

“She won’t even know until the foundation is empty.”

Emily stood motionless in the dark office, holding her breath.

Then Vivian asked, “And her father?”

Grant laughed.

“She hasn’t spoken to Robert in almost a year. She believes he tried to steal her inheritance.”

Emily felt the room tilt around her.

Grant had been the one who told her that.
