PATIENT TWO / Chapter 9 / 10

Chapter 9 - The Fall of Project Haven

Linda expected Emily to be afraid.

Instead, Emily moved behind Major Torres, pressed the emergency transmitter hidden inside her coat, and looked directly at the woman who had spent years controlling her family.

“You lost the house,” Emily said.

Linda’s smile remained calm.

“The house was never the center of Haven.”

Judge Kessler stepped toward James.

“Colonel Bennett, this facility operates under protected medical authority. Your presence is unlawful.”

James looked at the locked rooms.

“Then you will have no objection to federal investigators examining them.”

Kessler’s face changed.

Linda noticed the transmitter in Emily’s hand.

“Take it.”

The security employees moved forward.

Major Torres and Captain Hall blocked them.

No one reached for a weapon.

The corridor was too narrow, and Emily was too close.

James raised his voice.

“Every person here is being recorded.”

Linda stopped.

“You are bluffing.”

Emily pointed toward the ceiling.

A green light flashed inside the fire detector.

Mara had connected Catherine’s archive transmitter to the hospital system during the elevator descent.

The audio and video feed was being sent to Nora, federal investigators, and three independent news organizations.

Linda looked at Mara.

“You ungrateful girl.”

Mara’s voice shook, but she did not step back.

“Where is my daughter?”

“Safe.”

“That word means nothing when you say it.”

Linda turned to Emily.

“You believe exposing this floor will end Haven?”

“It will end your part of it.”

“You still do not understand what your mother discovered.”

“Then explain it.”

Linda glanced toward the active camera.

She wanted to remain silent.

Emily knew how to force her to speak.

“Dr. Vale said you do not control Project Haven.”

Anger moved across Linda’s face.

“Vale is a coward.”

“He said the sponsors used you.”

“I built this network.”

“You built the custody system. Someone else built the research program.”

Linda stepped closer.

“The research saved lives.”

“By imprisoning women?”

“By preserving work that governments wanted buried.”

James spoke.

“What work?”

Linda looked at him.

“Your father-in-law created a compound capable of preserving rare blood components far longer than conventional methods. He refused to sell it to the military or pharmaceutical companies.”

“So Haven stole it.”

“Haven continued it.”

“Through Catherine?”

“Catherine carried a hereditary marker that made the compound stable.”

Emily placed one hand protectively over her stomach.

“And you believe I carry it too.”

“We know you do.”

“How?”

Linda’s silence revealed enough.

The prenatal examinations.

The unexplained blood tests.

The replaced doctor.

Project Haven had not merely evaluated Emily.

It had tested her.

James moved forward.

“You will never touch her again.”

Linda looked almost amused.

“I do not need to.”

A screen above Patient One’s door illuminated.

A countdown appeared.

00:09:58.

Emily looked toward Mara.

“What is that?”

Mara’s face went pale.

“Data purge.”

Linda had initiated the destruction of Project Haven’s digital records.

Major Torres contacted the federal team waiting above.

The elevator had been remotely disabled.

The emergency stairs were sealed.

Captain Hall examined the security console.

“Records are stored in a local server room.”

Mara pointed toward a door beyond Patient Two.

“That corridor leads to the research core.”

James looked at Emily.

“You remain here with Torres.”

Emily shook her head.

“The server may require Patient Two identification.”

Linda smiled.

“It does.”

Emily realized the trap.

The system had been designed to recognize her biometric information. To prevent the purge, she would have to enter the research core willingly.

James objected.

Linda interrupted.

“You have nine minutes, Colonel. Choose between protecting Emily from the corridor and protecting every Haven victim whose identity will disappear when the server resets.”

Emily looked toward the numbered rooms.

Each represented a woman whose story had been rewritten as illness.

Some might still be alive.

Some children might still be searching for their mothers.

“We go,” Emily said.

James’s expression hardened.

“I said no.”

“And I am not your soldier.”

She turned to Major Torres.

“Stay with Linda and Kessler. Do not let them leave.”

Torres nodded.

Emily, James, Mara, and Captain Hall entered the research corridor.

The timer continued.

00:07:42.

At the first checkpoint, a scanner requested Emily’s palm.

Patient Two recognized.

At the second, it requested a voice sample.

Emily stated her name.

Identity confirmed.

The final door opened into a circular room filled with server cabinets and medical storage units.

A glass chamber stood at the center.

Inside was an empty hospital bed.

Above it, another label glowed.

MATERNAL PAIRING STATION.

Mara went to the control system.

“The purge is encrypted.”

Captain Hall connected a recovery device.

“We need the administrator key.”

Emily remembered the number on Catherine’s brass key.

170499.

She entered it.

ACCESS DENIED.

James examined Catherine’s letter.

“The woman who entered the car was not me.”

He looked at the date again.

“It is not the accident date. It is an identification code.”

Emily tried H01170499.

The screen changed.

SECOND AUTHORIZATION REQUIRED.

PATIENT ONE.

Emily’s hope fell.

They could not stop the purge without Catherine.

The timer reached three minutes.

Mara searched the server cabinets.

“There may be a physical override.”

James found an old intercom connected to the glass chamber.

A recording light blinked.

He pressed the button.

“Catherine, if you can hear this, we found Emily. She is safe.”

Nothing happened.

Emily watched the timer.

“Mom, I do not know whether you ever heard my voice after I was born. I do not know why you disappeared or what they did to you. But if you built an escape into this system, I need you to show me.”

The control panel beeped.

A hidden audio file opened.

Catherine’s voice filled the room.

Emily, if you are hearing this, Haven has activated you as Patient Two.

The program will request my authorization because it believes only Patient One can access the master archive.

But Patient One was never a person.

Emily looked at James.

The recording continued.

Patient One is the name of the original research file. The system was designed to make Linda believe it required me. The true authorization is the first sentence James spoke when he held you after your birth.

James went pale.

“I don’t remember.”

The timer reached one minute.

Emily turned to him.

“Think.”

“I had just been told Catherine might not survive. The nurse placed you in my arms.”

“What did you say?”

James closed his eyes.

The memory returned not as words but as a feeling: a newborn wrapped in white, Catherine beyond a glass door, machines sounding around them, and the unbearable certainty that he might have to raise their daughter alone.

He opened his eyes.

“You are not anyone’s property.”

Emily entered the words.

The timer stopped at twelve seconds.

MASTER ARCHIVE UNLOCKED.

Files opened across every screen.

Names.

Payments.

Custody orders.

Medical results.

Locations of transferred patients.

The truth of Project Haven began uploading to the federal recovery device.

Mara searched the patient directory.

“H-14 dependent records.”

A file appeared.

Her daughter, Sophie Finch, was alive.

She had been placed with an adoptive family under a sealed identity, but Haven had continued monitoring her.

Mara covered her mouth as tears filled her eyes.

Captain Hall searched for Catherine Bennett.

The system displayed:

PATIENT ONE HUMAN SUBJECT RECORD REMOVED.

TRANSFER AUTHORIZATION: L. CARTER.

CURRENT LOCATION: UNKNOWN.

James looked toward the corridor.

Linda had erased Catherine’s destination from the central archive.

They returned to Patient One’s room.

Federal agents had reached the hidden floor through an emergency maintenance shaft.

Judge Kessler was in custody.

Dr. Vale’s court network had been exposed.

Linda stood beside the open elevator, surrounded by investigators.

Emily approached her.

“Where is my mother?”

Linda looked at the data recovery device in Hall’s hand.

“You destroyed decades of work.”

“No. We preserved evidence.”

“Evidence that will frighten people who do not understand what Haven prevented.”

“You stole children.”

“We redirected unstable family lines.”

“You stole lives.”

Linda’s perfect composure finally broke.

“I gave those children safe homes.”

“You gave wealthy people control.”

Linda looked at Emily’s stomach.

“One day, your son will learn what his blood can do. When that happens, you will understand why ordinary rules were never enough.”

Federal agents took Linda away.

As she passed James, she whispered something.

His face changed, but he did not respond.

Emily waited until Linda had disappeared into the elevator.

“What did she say?”

May you like

James looked down the empty corridor.

“She said Catherine did not want to be found.”
