Chapter 1 - The Locked Door

Six weeks earlier, Emily Carter believed the most serious problem in her marriage was that her husband had become too protective.

Ryan insisted that she stop driving during the final months of her pregnancy.

He began preparing every meal himself, although he had never cooked before.

He asked her to resign temporarily from the board of Bennett Biomedical, claiming the stress could affect the baby.

At first, his concern almost felt romantic.

After four years of marriage, Emily had grown accustomed to Ryan solving problems before she noticed them. When the kitchen sink leaked, he had a plumber at the house before breakfast. When reporters waited outside the Bennett Foundation gala, he quietly arranged another exit.

Whenever she questioned him, he smiled and said the same thing.

“I take care of my family.”

Emily had once found those words comforting.

Now they sounded like a warning.

The change began after her twenty-eight-week appointment.

Her regular physician, Dr. Leah Morgan, had been called away for an emergency. A substitute doctor named Adrian Vale examined Emily instead.

He was polite, calm, and strangely interested in her family history.

He asked about her relationship with her father.

He asked whether military discipline had made her childhood difficult.

He asked whether Emily ever felt watched, controlled, or abandoned.

“I came for a prenatal examination,” Emily said. “Why are you asking about my father?”

Dr. Vale’s smile did not change.

“Pregnancy can bring buried emotions to the surface.”

Emily glanced at Ryan, expecting him to object.

Instead, her husband leaned forward.

“She has been anxious lately.”

Emily stared at him.

“No, I haven’t.”

Ryan rested a hand over hers.

“You barely slept last night.”

“Because the baby was moving.”

Dr. Vale made a note.

“Sleep disruption. Irritability. Possible denial.”

Emily withdrew her hand from Ryan’s.

“What exactly are you writing?”

“Routine observations.”

When they returned home, Linda was waiting in the living room.

She had brought flowers, a soft blue blanket, and a box filled with baby clothes. Linda had always behaved like the perfect mother-in-law in public. She hosted charitable lunches, chaired hospital fundraisers, and remembered the names of every employee in Ryan’s company.

In private, her kindness often carried conditions.

She unfolded the blue blanket across Emily’s stomach.

“Our little boy will have everything.”

Emily moved the blanket away.

“Our child. Ryan’s and mine.”

Linda smiled.

“Of course.”

That evening, Emily tried to call her father.

Colonel James Bennett had returned from an overseas assignment two days earlier, but she had received only a short message from him.

Busy. I will call when possible.

The wording felt wrong.

Her father never wrote “when possible.” He always gave a specific time.

Emily called again.

The call went directly to voicemail.

Ryan entered the bedroom as she lowered the phone.

“You should rest.”

“I’m trying to reach Dad.”

“He is probably occupied.”

“He’s been occupied for six months.”

Ryan took the phone from her hand and placed it on the nightstand.

“You know how he is.”

Emily looked at him carefully.

“How is he?”

Ryan hesitated.

“Married to his work.”

It was the answer everyone used when they wanted Emily to stop defending her father.

James had not been an easy parent. After Catherine died, he had raised Emily through schedules, rules, and carefully controlled emotion. But he had never failed to answer her calls.

Not once.

Emily reached for the phone again.

Ryan held it out of reach.

“You need sleep.”

“Give it back.”

His expression remained calm, but his fingers tightened around the device.

“Emily.”

Something inside her became still.

It was not fear yet.

It was recognition.

She had seen Ryan angry before, but she had never seen him look at her as though she were a problem that required management.

“Give me my phone.”

After a long pause, he returned it.

That night, Emily waited until Ryan was asleep before checking her messages.

Several conversations had been deleted.

Her call history had been cleared.

A new medical application had been installed without her permission.

Inside the application were appointment notes from Dr. Vale.

Patient exhibits suspicion toward spouse.

Patient demonstrates fixation on unavailable father.

Patient may resist protective separation after birth.

Emily read the final sentence twice.

Recommended classification pending final evaluation.

A soft sound came from the hallway.

She closed the application and pretended to sleep.

The bedroom door opened.

Linda entered carrying a glass of water.

Ryan sat up.

“Is everything ready?” he whispered.

Linda placed the glass beside Emily.

“Friday morning. The petition will be filed before her father knows anything.”

Emily kept her breathing even.

Ryan looked toward her.

“And if she refuses?”

Linda’s answer was almost tender.

“Then Dr. Vale will record that she is no longer capable of making decisions.”

After they left, Emily opened her eyes.

The glass of water stood inches from her hand.

A pale residue rested at the bottom.

She did not drink it.

At sunrise, she locked herself in the bathroom and tried calling her father from an old tablet hidden beneath the sink.

The device had no cellular connection, but it still connected to the house network.

She typed a message.

Dad, something is wrong. Ryan and Linda are planning to file for custody before the baby is born. Please call me.

The message appeared to send.

Then the screen changed.

CONNECTION BLOCKED BY ADMINISTRATOR.

Emily stared at the warning.

Someone had restricted every device in the house.

Behind her, the bathroom handle moved.

Ryan’s voice came through the door.

“Emily, open the door.”

She remained silent.

His tone softened.

“I know you found the notes.”

Her heart began to race.

“Open the door, and we can discuss this calmly.”

Emily looked around the bathroom for another exit.

There was only one narrow window above the bathtub, too small and too high for her to reach safely.

The handle moved again.

This time, Ryan was using a key.

Emily backed away as the door opened.

Ryan entered first.

May you like

Linda stood behind him.

And between them was Dr. Adrian Vale, holding a black medical bag.
