PATIENT TWO / Chapter 8 / 10

Chapter 8 - The Hearing That Was Never Meant to Happen

Before they could search St. Catherine’s Memorial, Emily had to survive the custody hearing.

Linda’s attorneys had accelerated the petition.

They claimed Emily’s disappearance from the Carter estate, refusal of medical treatment, and involvement with military personnel proved she was under her father’s control.

The hearing was scheduled in a private family courtroom only twelve hours after the archive was opened.

Nora objected.

No ordinary custody matter moved that quickly.

The speed confirmed what Catherine’s records already suggested.

Project Haven had people inside the court system.

Emily entered the courtroom beside her father.

Ryan arrived separately with his own attorney.

Reporters waited outside, but the judge sealed the proceedings.

Linda was absent.

Her attorneys claimed she was receiving treatment for emotional distress after Emily’s accusations.

Dr. Vale appeared through a secured video connection from federal custody.

Judge Evelyn Kessler looked down from the bench.

“Mrs. Carter, this proceeding concerns the safety of your unborn child. It is not a criminal trial of your family.”

Emily sat upright.

“My family locked me in a room.”

“That allegation is under review.”

“There was a camera behind the painting.”

“Your husband’s family claims it was installed for medical observation.”

“I did not consent.”

The judge glanced at Dr. Vale’s report.

“According to the documentation, you did.”

Nora stood.

“The signature was forged.”

“That has not been established.”

“We have authentication records.”

“You may submit them after today’s temporary guardianship decision.”

Emily understood the structure.

The decision had already been made.

Evidence would be accepted only after Linda received control.

Nora continued.

“Your Honor, Linda Carter is currently evading investigators.”

“Mrs. Carter has not been charged with a crime.”

“She fled her home through a concealed tunnel.”

“Speculation.”

“She left fourteen patient files behind.”

The judge’s face tightened.

“Counsel, I will not allow unrelated medical records to turn this hearing into a public performance.”

Nora placed Catherine’s archive ledger on the evidence table.

“These records show that your court approved seven Project Haven guardianship transfers.”

Silence filled the room.

Judge Kessler looked toward the sealed doors.

“Remove that document.”

Nora did not move.

“Your signature appears on each order.”

The judge struck the desk with her gavel.

“This hearing is suspended.”

Two court officers approached Nora.

James stood, but Emily caught his sleeve.

“No.”

Reacting with force would give Kessler exactly what she wanted.

Emily rose instead.

“Your Honor, may I ask Dr. Vale one question before we leave?”

“No.”

Dr. Vale spoke from the screen.

“Let her ask.”

The judge glared at him.

Vale no longer seemed interested in protecting the network that had abandoned him.

Emily faced the screen.

“Why am I called Patient Two instead of H-02?”

Vale smiled faintly.

“Because the H cases were ordinary transfers.”

“And mine?”

“Yours continues Patient One’s original protocol.”

“What protocol?”

Judge Kessler ordered the connection terminated.

Major Torres, observing from the back of the courtroom, signaled to a federal technician.

The video remained active through an independent recording channel.

Vale looked directly into the camera.

“Catherine Bennett was not chosen because she was wealthy. She was chosen because her father created the first viable blood-preservation compound used in the Haven program.”

Emily thought of Bennett Biomedical’s new emergency blood-storage system.

“My grandfather’s research?”

“Your company believes it recently invented the technology. In reality, it rediscovered part of his work.”

“What does that have to do with my baby?”

Vale’s expression changed.

“For years, Haven sponsors funded private medical trials using genetic markers from selected families. Patient One carried the marker. Patient Two inherited it.”

Nora stepped closer to the screen.

“Are you saying Project Haven conducted unauthorized medical research?”

“I am saying the custody transfers were designed to provide long-term access to specific family lines.”

Judge Kessler left the courtroom through a private door.

Federal agents followed.

Emily’s stomach tightened.

This time, it was not fear.

A strong pressure moved across her abdomen.

She placed one hand against the table.

James noticed immediately.

“What is wrong?”

“I think it is a contraction.”

The room became chaotic.

Nora called for medical assistance.

Ryan took one step toward Emily, then stopped, understanding he no longer had the right to approach without permission.

Emily breathed slowly until the pressure faded.

A courthouse nurse examined her and said stress had likely caused a false contraction, but she needed immediate monitoring.

Before Emily was taken from the room, Vale called her name from the screen.

“Emily.”

She turned.

“Linda will go to St. Catherine’s.”

“Why?”

“She cannot activate the final protocol without Patient One.”

“Activate what?”

The connection ended.

Federal agents entered Judge Kessler’s office.

The judge was gone.

A hidden elevator led from her private chambers to an underground parking garage.

Security footage showed her entering a vehicle registered to a St. Catherine’s Memorial Hospital administrator.

Linda had escaped through the same network.

Now Judge Kessler was going with her.

At the hospital, doctors confirmed Emily and the baby were stable.

Ryan waited outside the examination room.

When Emily emerged, he stood.

“I gave the federal agents everything.”

“Everything?”

“My company records. Payments from my mother. Messages with Vale. The trust documents I convinced you to sign.”

Emily looked at him.

“Why?”

“Because the truth should not depend on whether you forgive me.”

It was the first honorable thing he had done without expecting a reward.

Emily nodded once.

“That will help the investigation.”

Ryan understood the distance in her answer.

“I know.”

Before he left, he handed James an access card.

“My mother owns a private research foundation connected to St. Catherine’s. This card opens the executive elevators.”

James took it.

“How did you get it?”

“She gave it to me years ago. I thought it was for charity events.”

Mara joined them near the hospital exit.

“The hidden floor can be reached only through the old maternity wing.”

“Why have you never gone there?” Emily asked.

“I tried.”

Mara touched the H-14 mark on her arm.

“They caught me before I reached the elevator.”

“What happened?”

“They gave me a choice. Work inside Linda’s house and report anyone investigating Haven, or lose all contact with my daughter.”

Emily stared at her.

“Where is your daughter?”

Mara’s eyes filled.

“I do not know.”

James looked toward the city skyline.

“Then tonight we find every record they have.”

Emily shook her head.

“Not without me.”

“You just had a contraction.”

“And Patient One is my mother.”

James stepped closer.

“I will not risk losing you to find Catherine.”

“You are not the only person who lost her.”

For a moment, father and daughter stood on opposite sides of the same fear.

Then James handed Emily the access card.

“Stay between Torres and me.”

They reached St. Catherine’s Memorial shortly after midnight.

The old maternity wing had been closed for renovation, but Ryan’s access card activated the elevator.

There were no buttons inside.

Mara pressed her palm against the rear wall.

A hidden panel illuminated.

H-14 recognized.

The elevator descended.

Not one floor.

Seven.

When the doors opened, they entered a bright white corridor lined with locked rooms.

Names had been removed from every door.

Numbers remained.

H-05.

H-08.

H-11.

H-14.

At the end of the corridor were two larger rooms.

PATIENT ONE.

PATIENT TWO.

The door to Patient Two stood open.

Inside was a nursery prepared for Emily’s baby.

A crib waited beneath soft lights.

Fresh clothing filled the cabinets.

On the wall hung a photograph of Emily taken through the hidden camera in Linda’s bedroom.

Mara entered Patient One’s access code.

The door opened.

The room beyond was empty.

A monitor remained active.

Across the screen, a message appeared.

TRANSFER COMPLETE.

DESTINATION: HAVEN NORTH.

Emily turned toward Mara.

“Where is Haven North?”

Mara stared at the destination code.

“It is not a place.”

“What is it?”

Before Mara could answer, the elevator doors opened behind them.

Linda Carter stepped into the corridor with Judge Kessler and six hospital security employees.

May you like

Linda looked at Emily’s stomach.

“You brought Patient Two exactly where she needed to be.”
