Chapter 5 - A Father at the Gate

Emily had no intention of returning alone.

She also had no intention of abandoning Ryan.

Betrayal did not erase danger. Whatever he had done, Linda and Vale could not be allowed to make another person disappear behind a diagnosis.

Sergeant Cole wanted to request a warrant.

“They will move him before a judge signs it,” Emily said.

“We cannot enter a private home based on an anonymous photograph.”

“You saw the locked room.”

“I saw a family conflict supported by competing medical claims. Their attorneys are already challenging my report.”

Emily hated that he was right.

Project Haven had survived because it did not look like a criminal organization. It looked like a network of doctors, caregivers, lawyers, charities, and concerned relatives.

Each person performed one apparently legal action.

Together, those actions formed a prison.

Emily contacted the Bennett Biomedical security director, but he refused to intervene without authorization from the board.

Linda had already circulated a statement claiming Emily was medically unwell.

Ryan’s company released another statement declaring him temporarily unavailable due to a family emergency.

By sunset, the story had begun appearing online.

Pregnant heiress suffers breakdown amid inheritance dispute.

Not one report mentioned the locked bedroom.

At 7:40 p.m., a military convoy stopped outside Linda’s estate.

Colonel James Bennett stepped from the lead vehicle.

He had learned the truth only an hour earlier.

Nora Hale, the real Nora Hale, had contacted him after discovering someone had used her professional credentials to submit false documents in Emily’s name.

James had read the messages he believed his daughter sent.

Do not contact me.

Your presence is harmful.

I need distance from your control.

Every sentence had struck the guilt he carried over Catherine’s death.

He had obeyed because he believed distance was what Emily wanted.

Then Nora showed him the authentication records.

The messages had originated from Linda Carter’s estate.

James did not call the police first.

He called Major Ava Torres.

They arrived at the gates with military legal authorization connected to the fraudulent use of secure defense personnel information. Project Haven had accessed James’s classified deployment schedule while impersonating Emily.

That gave him a legal doorway.

He intended to use it.

Linda watched the convoy through the bedroom window.

Ryan sat near the bed, holding the small object he had removed from the vent.

It was an old voice recorder wrapped in plastic.

He had managed to press the playback button before Linda discovered him.

Catherine Bennett’s voice had filled the room.

They keep telling James I am confused. They say I imagined the medication. Linda says the baby will be safer without me. If anyone finds this, Project Haven is not a clinic. It is a transfer system.

The recording contained names.

Doctors.

Lawyers.

Judges.

Wealthy sponsors.

Families who wanted control of children, trusts, or inheritances.

Ryan had heard only the first five minutes before Linda entered.

Now the recorder rested in his hand.

Linda stood near the door.

“You have no idea what that recording could destroy.”

Ryan looked toward her.

“Did you kill Catherine?”

Linda’s face remained unreadable.

“No.”

“Did Vale?”

“No.”

“Then what happened?”

“She escaped before the transfer was completed.”

“The police report says she died.”

“The police report says a vehicle registered to Catherine Bennett went into a river.”

Ryan slowly stood.

“Was she in it?”

Linda looked toward the gates as another military vehicle arrived.

“That question has kept Project Haven alive for twenty-seven years.”

Ryan tightened his grip on the recorder.

“Emily deserves to know.”

“Emily’s child is worth more than Emily’s feelings.”

Ryan stared at his mother.

For the first time, he saw her without the stories she had created around herself.

Linda did not believe she was stealing a baby.

She believed ownership naturally belonged to whoever had the power to claim it.

“You were going to take my son.”

“I was going to give him a future.”

“He already had one.”

“With a mother controlled by grief and a father controlled by debt?”

Ryan stepped toward the door.

Linda entered a code on the keypad.

The lock engaged.

“You are not leaving.”

Outside, James stood before the estate gates.

A private security guard spoke through the intercom.

“Mrs. Carter has declined entry.”

Major Torres held up the court authorization.

“This order permits us to inspect all systems containing unlawfully obtained military data.”

The guard hesitated.

Linda’s voice came through his earpiece.

“Do not open the gate.”

James stepped toward the camera.

“Linda, I know Emily is inside.”

No answer.

“I know about Project Haven.”

The outdoor speakers activated.

“You know nothing about it, James.”

Hearing Linda’s voice after so many years brought a memory back with brutal clarity.

Catherine standing in their kitchen, frightened and exhausted.

A woman from the hospital had called repeatedly, insisting Catherine needed evaluation.

James had dismissed Catherine’s fears as postpartum anxiety.

He had trusted the specialists.

One of those specialists had been Linda.

“You told Catherine I was trying to take Emily from her,” James said.

“You did take Emily.”

“I brought my daughter home.”

“You removed her from a program designed to protect her.”

“You were never protecting anyone.”

Linda laughed softly through the speakers.

“Then why did Catherine run from you?”

The words struck their intended target.

Major Torres glanced at James.

He did not move.

“For twenty-seven years,” Linda continued, “you have told yourself that weather caused the accident. But Catherine left because she discovered what you signed.”

James’s face changed.

“What document?”

“The emergency guardianship consent.”

“I never signed one.”

“Your signature is in the original Haven file.”

James looked toward Torres.

Before he could respond, every light in the estate went dark.

The speakers fell silent.

The gates began to open.

A figure appeared inside the house and ran toward them.

It was Ryan.

He reached the front steps carrying the recorder.

Then a sharp alarm sounded.

Security shutters descended over the doors and windows.

Ryan threw the recorder through the narrowing gate.

Major Torres caught it.

The gate reversed and closed before Ryan could escape.

James picked up the recorder’s plastic wrapping.

May you like

Written across it in faded ink were four words.

JAMES SIGNED THE FIRST TRANSFER.
