Chapter 6 - Patient Two
Emily listened to Catherine’s recording inside a secured hospital office.
Her father stood near the window.
Nora Hale sat beside the desk, comparing the names in Catherine’s testimony with legal and medical records from the same period.
Sergeant Cole guarded the door.
Major Torres had delivered the recorder less than an hour earlier.
Ryan was still inside Linda’s estate.
The recording began with static.
Then Catherine’s voice emerged, young and frightened but unmistakably clear.
My name is Catherine Bennett. My daughter, Emily, was born six days ago. Dr. Adrian Vale says I am dangerous, but I have not threatened anyone. Linda Carter says my husband signed a temporary transfer agreement. James would never give away our child. If his signature is there, it was placed there without his knowledge.
James closed his eyes.
Emily watched him.
“Did you sign anything at the hospital?”
“Dozens of forms. Catherine had complications. They said some documents were needed in case I was deployed unexpectedly.”
“You didn’t read them?”
“I trusted the hospital.”
The admission seemed to cost him more than any accusation.
Catherine’s recording continued.
Project Haven chooses families with assets, influence, or children tied to valuable trusts. They isolate the mother, create a medical record of instability, and persuade the spouse that temporary separation is necessary. Once a guardian is appointed, the program gains control through fees, donations, and private agreements.
Nora paused the recording.
“This explains Emily’s trust.”
James looked at her.
“Catherine’s trust was not created until after the accident.”
“That is what we believed.”
Nora removed several copied pages from her bag.
“I checked the original registration archive. Catherine created a prenatal trust three months before Emily was born. It contained her Bennett Biomedical shares and a clause preventing transfer to any spouse.”
Emily frowned.
“My father never controlled my shares?”
“No. The shares remained under independent management until your twenty-fifth birthday. Catherine protected them from everyone, including James.”
“Why?”
“Because she knew Haven was targeting the company.”
Nora turned to another page.
“When Emily’s child is born, part of the trust restructures. The child receives protected future voting rights.”
James understood.
“Linda wants guardianship to control those rights.”
“Exactly.”
Emily looked toward the recorder.
“Then Ryan’s marriage to me was not enough. They needed me declared unfit.”
Cole folded his arms.
“And Patient Two?”
Nora pointed to the project codes in Catherine’s records.
“Patient One was the original case designed around the Bennett trust. It failed when James removed Emily from the hospital.”
“Catherine disappeared afterward,” Emily said.
Nora nodded.
“Project Haven may have remained focused on the Bennett family. Emily became the second attempt.”
James turned away from the window.
“We go back tonight.”
Cole shook his head.
“The warrant request is still being reviewed.”
“Ryan is inside.”
“And Linda will claim he chose to remain.”
Emily stood.
“I will return.”
James immediately objected.
“No.”
“They want me. That gives us leverage.”
“You are not entering that house again.”
Emily faced him.
“You do not get to disappear for seven months and return as my commanding officer.”
The words landed between them.
James’s voice softened.
“I believed you wanted me gone.”
“You should have known me better.”
“I should have.”
His answer removed the argument from her anger.
James looked at the floor for a moment.
“I failed your mother because I trusted people who used my fear against me. Then I failed you because I trusted messages instead of coming to your door.”
Emily’s eyes filled, but she did not look away.
“I needed you.”
“I know.”
“Ryan said you caused Mom’s death.”
James’s jaw tightened.
“I spent twenty-seven years believing that too.”
“Did you?”
“I left for a training exercise when she begged me to stay. I thought the doctors were helping her. When I returned, she was gone.”
Emily glanced at the recorder.
“Maybe she was trying to protect us.”
“Then we finish what she started.”
The plan formed quickly.
Emily would contact Linda and offer an exchange.
She would return voluntarily if Linda released Ryan and allowed an independent physician to examine her.
Linda would believe the independent physician could be controlled.
James and Torres would enter under the existing authorization once Emily confirmed the location of the server containing the stolen military records.
Cole would coordinate with local officers he trusted.
Nora would file an emergency injunction stopping all custody proceedings.
Emily called Linda.
Her mother-in-law answered immediately.
“You finally understand the situation.”
“I understand that you want my child’s trust.”
Linda did not deny it.
“Return home, and Ryan leaves.”
“I want proof that he is alive.”
A video call began.
Ryan appeared in the east bedroom.
He looked exhausted but uninjured.
He held one hand near his jacket pocket.
Emily recognized the movement.
He still had something else from the vent.
“I’m sorry,” Ryan said.
Linda moved the phone away.
“Your apology can continue after Emily arrives.”
Emily steadied her voice.
“I want Dr. Morgan present.”
“Your former physician is unavailable.”
“Then there is no agreement.”
A long silence followed.
Linda finally said, “Bring whoever you choose. Dr. Vale will participate.”
The call ended.
Nora looked at Emily.
“Why Dr. Morgan?”
“Because Vale replaced her without warning.”
Cole checked hospital staffing records.
His expression changed.
“Dr. Leah Morgan did not take emergency leave.”
“Where is she?”
“She has been listed as a patient at Haven Ridge Recovery Center for five weeks.”
Nora searched the name.
“Haven Ridge is owned by a medical trust connected to Adrian Vale.”
Emily felt the pattern deepen.
Dr. Morgan had discovered something.
Project Haven had treated her the same way it treated its targets.
James reached for his phone.
“I will have Torres send a team.”
Before he completed the call, the hospital lights flickered.
Cole looked toward the door.
The lock clicked.
The officer outside did not respond when Cole called his name.
The door opened.
Dr. Adrian Vale entered wearing a hospital identification badge.
Two administrators stood behind him.
Vale held a court order.
“Emily Carter has been placed under my temporary medical supervision.”
Nora seized the paper.
“This judge has no authority over this hospital.”
Vale smiled.
“The hospital board disagrees.”
James stepped between Vale and Emily.
“You will not touch her.”
Vale looked at him without fear.
“Colonel Bennett, your signature created Project Haven’s first successful legal precedent. You are hardly in a position to object.”
James’s expression hardened.
“The first transfer failed.”
Vale’s smile widened.
“No, Colonel.”
