Chapter 8 - The House With Seven Doors

Elena’s childhood home had been abandoned since her father’s death.

The estate stood three counties away, surrounded by oak trees and a stone wall overtaken by ivy. Marcus had once pressured Elena to sell it, but the property remained trapped in probate because the original deed could not be located.

Reyes obtained temporary access under the ongoing investigation.

Elena brought Chloe only because the child refused to remain without her. Two child-protection specialists accompanied them and waited outside the study.

The room looked smaller than Elena remembered.

Dust covered the shelves. The clock above the fireplace had stopped. Seven narrow brass panels were built into the wall.

Benjamin examined them.

“No locks.”

Elena stood before the first panel.

Her father’s voice returned from memory.

Which door remembers the rain?

She pressed the third panel.

Nothing happened.

Chloe wandered toward the fireplace.

“Mom, this song is inside the clock.”

Elena listened.

A faint melody came from the stopped clock mechanism.

The lullaby.

She opened the clock face and found a cylinder covered in small metal pins.

A music-box code.

When she turned the key, the cylinder played seven notes, paused, then repeated four.

Seven and four.

Elena pressed the seventh brass panel, then the fourth.

The wall shifted.

Behind it was a narrow room containing no money, jewels, or documents.

Only a chair.

A camera.

And a screen.

The screen illuminated when Elena entered.

A recorded image of her father appeared.

He looked exhausted and frightened.

“Elena, if you are watching this, I failed to keep the Circle away from you.”

Chloe reached for her mother’s hand.

Elena could barely breathe.

Her father continued.

“Meridian was never a company. It was a registry. For decades, powerful people used it to move identities, assets, and children across borders. I believed I could expose them from inside.”

The screen displayed photographs of politicians, executives, judges, physicians, and children.

Some of the children were listed under multiple names.

“I copied their records and locked them behind a system requiring a living cognitive key. You.”

Elena stepped closer.

Her father’s recorded face filled the screen.

“I trained you without explaining why. Stories, songs, rooms, questions. You cannot surrender the sequence because you do not consciously know it. The memories must be awakened in the correct order.”

Benjamin whispered, “That’s why Marcus kept her alive.”

The recording continued.

“If the Circle learns the key transferred genetically, they will pursue your child.”

Elena looked at Chloe.

The girl was staring at the screen.

Her father’s final words came slowly.

“Trust no one who carries the crescent mark. Not even the person who gives you this recording.”

The screen went black.

A click sounded behind them.

Reyes drew his weapon.

The hidden door had closed.

A red light appeared above the camera.

Then a woman’s voice filled the room.

“Cognitive stage one confirmed.”

Elena searched for an exit.

The chair restraints opened automatically.

Gas hissed from the wall.

Benjamin covered Chloe’s face with his jacket.

Reyes fired at the camera.

The bullet ricocheted.

Elena remembered the black diamond at the lodge and searched the floor. Beneath the chair, she found the same shape cut into the wood.

She pressed it.

The gas stopped.

The wall opened.

They escaped into the study.

The child-protection specialists were unconscious outside.

One had a crescent symbol drawn across her palm.

Reyes checked the front entrance.

The vehicles were gone.

A white envelope lay on the floor.

Inside was a photograph taken at Ashbourne Academy only hours earlier.

It showed Officer Reyes speaking to Marcus in the parking lot before the family meeting.

On the back was a sentence.

ASK HIM WHO ORDERED THE FIRE.

Elena looked at Reyes.

He did not deny knowing Marcus.
