Chapter 13 - The Vault of Stolen Names

Evelyn led them through tunnels beneath the greenhouse.
Elena carried Chloe when the child became tired, though Chloe insisted she could walk.
The tunnels ended beneath an abandoned courthouse near the county border. A freight elevator descended nearly three hundred feet into the ground.
The primary Meridian vault was built inside an old military command bunker.
Its central chamber contained thousands of vertical glass columns filled with cold blue light. Names moved across their surfaces.
Some belonged to the living.
Others to the officially dead.
Marcus stood at the central console.
Thomas Vale lay on the floor nearby with blood spreading across his shirt.
Victoria held a pistol against Marcus’s back.
When Elena entered with Chloe, both turned.
Marcus smiled.
“I knew you would come.”
Elena looked at her father.
He was breathing.
Benjamin and Reyes moved toward him, but Victoria pointed the weapon in their direction.
“No one touches him.”
Evelyn stepped forward.
Victoria’s hand shook.
“You.”
“Mara,” Evelyn said.
“Don’t call me that.”
“It is your name.”
“My name is Victoria Sterling.”
“That identity was assigned when you were nine.”
Victoria’s face twisted.
“You put me in Meridian House.”
“Your father did.”
“You trained us to become whatever rich families needed.”
“I tried to dismantle the program.”
“You selected Elena for protection and left the rest of us there.”
Evelyn’s silence confirmed it.
Marcus touched the console.
“We don’t have time for old grievances.”
The countdown showed forty-three minutes.
Elena moved toward her father.
Marcus blocked her.
“He lives only if the vault opens.”
“You already shot him.”
“A controlled wound.”
Thomas coughed.
“Elena... don’t listen.”
Marcus kicked him in the ribs.
Chloe screamed.
Elena lunged, but Reyes caught her before Victoria could fire.
Marcus crouched beside Chloe.
“You remember the questions, don’t you?”
Chloe hid behind Elena.
“You taught me to lie.”
“I taught you to survive.”
“You locked me away.”
“That was Victoria.”
Victoria stared at him.
“You ordered every punishment.”
Marcus smiled faintly.
“And you enjoyed carrying them out.”
Victoria pointed the gun at his head.
“Open the files proving who assigned the marriage.”
“You already know.”
“I want the name.”
Evelyn spoke quietly.
“It was Thomas.”
Elena looked at her father.
Thomas closed his eyes.
“No.”
Evelyn continued.
“Thomas selected Marcus because he believed emotional attachment would weaken him. He expected Marcus to betray the Circle for Elena.”
Marcus laughed.
“Instead, Elena became my route into the vault.”
Thomas forced himself upright.
“You loved her.”
Marcus’s face changed.
Only for a moment.
But Elena saw it.
Thomas continued.
“That was why you failed the transfer. Why you did not kill her. Why you kept visiting the clinic after Victoria told you to stop.”
Victoria looked at Marcus as if the floor had vanished beneath her.
“You told me you were checking the authorization.”
“I was.”
“You stayed beside her bed.”
Marcus said nothing.
Elena remembered waking in the clinic and seeing a figure beyond the curtain.
A hand adjusting her blanket.
A voice whispering that everything would be easier if she forgot him.
Marcus had loved her in whatever damaged way he understood love.
It changed nothing.
“You took my child,” Elena said.
“I protected her from the Circle.”
“You became the Circle.”
The countdown reached thirty minutes.
The console requested two cognitive signatures.
ELENA VALE.
CHLOE STERLING.
Evelyn placed the silver device beside the terminal.
“Once the sequence begins, the chamber will lock.”
“Will we forget each other?” Chloe asked.
“We do not know.”
Elena knelt.
“You don’t have to do this.”
“If we don’t, the bad people keep hurting children.”
“You are not responsible for saving everyone.”
Chloe looked at the glass columns.
“No. But we can try.”
Marcus reached for her.
Elena stepped between them.
“You will never touch her again.”
The chamber shook.
Victoria had fired.
The bullet struck Marcus in the shoulder.
He fell against the console.
The countdown accelerated.
SYSTEM BREACH.
05:00.
04:59.
Thomas shouted, “The vault thinks Marcus is forcing access!”
Steel doors began closing around the chamber.
Evelyn pushed Elena and Chloe toward the central platform.
“Start the sequence now!”
May you like
Victoria fired again.
The lights went out.
