Chapter 10 - Beneath Halcyon House

Police surrounded Halcyon House before midnight.

The estate appeared empty.

Doors were unlocked. Lights burned in every room. Dinner remained untouched in the dining hall, as though the occupants had vanished during a meal.

Elena led Reyes and Benjamin to the basement.

Chloe remained in an armored vehicle outside with federal child-protection agents.

The concrete wall shown in the digital map stood behind a wine rack.

Elena played the lullaby on her phone.

Nothing happened.

She recited her father’s phrase.

“Never tell them which door remembers you.”

A section of concrete slid aside.

A steel elevator waited behind it.

The controls contained no buttons.

A camera scanned Elena’s eye.

A voice asked, “What did the rain forget?”

The first cognitive prompt.

Elena closed her eyes.

A childhood memory surfaced.

She was seven, standing in the rain outside her father’s study. He had burned papers in a metal basin and told her the rain could wash away footprints but not the place a person intended to go.

“The rain forgot the destination,” Elena answered.

The elevator descended.

The underground complex was larger than the lodge corridor.

Rows of servers filled glass rooms. Medical chambers lined one wall. Hundreds of paper files sat inside temperature-controlled cabinets.

At the center was the chamber from the video.

The chair was empty.

Blood marked one restraint.

Marcus, Victoria, and Elena’s father were gone.

A message glowed on the main terminal.

WELCOME BACK, E.

Benjamin examined the server labels.

“These are identity files.”

Reyes opened one cabinet.

Birth certificates.

Adoption records.

Passports.

Death certificates.

Every document appeared authentic.

Elena found a drawer labeled STERLING.

Inside were files for Marcus, Victoria, Chloe, and herself.

Marcus’s file began when he was eleven years old.

His original name was Adrian Kessler.

His parents had belonged to a criminal-finance network and died during a government raid.

The Circle gave him a new identity.

Victoria’s original name was Mara Rowe.

Dr. Alistair Rowe was her biological father.

Elena looked at the photograph clipped to the file.

Victoria as a child stood beside Marcus at a private institution called Meridian House.

“They grew up together,” Benjamin said.

“They were trained together,” Elena replied.

Her own file was thicker.

It documented her childhood lessons, emotional attachments, fears, and memory triggers.

Someone had monitored her for most of her life.

At the bottom was a marriage recommendation.

SUBJECT ADRIAN KESSLER SUITABLE FOR LONG-TERM ACCESS OPERATION.

Elena read it twice.

Marcus had never met her by accident.

Their first date.

Their wedding.

The birth of Chloe.

Everything had been part of a plan.

A speaker activated.

Victoria’s voice filled the chamber.

“It hurts, doesn’t it?”

Elena searched for the camera.

“To discover that love was only a job.”

“Where is my father?”

“He is where he has always been. At the center of this.”

“Marcus lied to you too.”

Victoria laughed.

“Marcus lies to everyone.”

“He hid the value of the vault from you.”

“I don’t care about the money.”

“You cared enough to marry him.”

“I married him because your existence was supposed to end.”

The lights dimmed.

A door opened at the far end of the chamber.

Elena entered with Reyes and Benjamin.

Inside stood a long table covered with photographs.

Each image showed Chloe at a different age.

Sleeping.

Eating.

At school.

Inside the locked room.

The final photograph had been taken less than ten minutes earlier.

Chloe sat in the armored vehicle outside.

The federal agents beside her were unconscious.

A masked woman stood behind the child.

Elena ran toward the elevator.

The doors closed before she reached it.

On the speaker, Chloe screamed.
