Chapter 6 - The Train With No Passengers

Westmere Station had not served passengers in eleven years.

The platforms were overgrown with weeds. Rusted tracks disappeared into a tunnel beneath the mountain. The damaged clock above the entrance still showed six fifteen.

Elena arrived with Benjamin and Reyes minutes before sunset.

Police units had been ordered to wait two miles away.

Marcus had sent a message from Chloe’s phone.

COME ALONE OR SHE BOARDS THE TRAIN.

Elena had no intention of obeying completely.

Benjamin and Reyes stayed beyond the ticket hall while she entered the main platform.

A black train waited beneath the clock.

Its windows were dark.

The engine was running.

Marcus stood beside the final carriage with one hand on Chloe’s shoulder.

Victoria waited near the open door.

Chloe wore a gray coat and carried no shoes.

Elena’s chest tightened.

“Let her go.”

Marcus smiled.

“You look different.”

“You made me disappear.”

“You did that yourself.”

Victoria pushed Chloe toward the train.

Elena stepped forward.

Marcus raised a small remote.

“Another step and the tunnel collapses.”

Reyes’s voice came through the tiny receiver in Elena’s ear.

Keep him talking.

Elena looked at Chloe.

“Are you hurt?”

Chloe shook her head.

Victoria gripped the child’s shoulder harder.

“She has become very dishonest since she started imagining you.”

“I’m not imaginary.”

“To her, you are whatever we tell her you are.”

Chloe stared at the ground.

Elena wanted her daughter to look up, but she understood why she did not.

A child survives by learning which truth is safe to show.

Marcus pointed toward the train.

“You will board the first carriage. Chloe will board the last. Once we reach the other side of the tunnel, I will decide which of you leaves.”

“You think I’m going anywhere with you?”

“You already did once.”

The words struck something loose in Elena’s memory.

Rain.

The car.

The staircase.

Then a railway tunnel.

She remembered waking briefly inside a moving carriage while Marcus argued with Dr. Rowe.

She had not escaped the clinic on the first night.

That memory had been planted.

“Where did you take me after the lodge?”

Marcus’s smile widened.

“You’re beginning to remember.”

Victoria looked at him sharply.

“That wasn’t part of the agreement.”

Elena heard Reyes whisper through the receiver.

Movement near the east platform.

Someone else was there.

A figure appeared inside the ticket hall.

Dr. Alistair Rowe.

He was older than in the photograph, with silver hair and a scar along his jaw.

Marcus turned.

“You were told to stay away.”

Rowe held a pistol.

“You changed the plan.”

Victoria pulled Chloe behind her.

Elena remained still.

Rowe looked at her.

“You should have completed the transfer.”

“What transfer?”

“The one your husband paid for.”

Marcus laughed.

“Be careful, Doctor.”

Rowe’s hand trembled.

“You promised my name would remain buried.”

“You left tapes.”

“I left insurance.”

Elena looked from one man to the other.

“What did you do to me?”

Rowe answered without taking his eyes off Marcus.

“We prepared you to accept a new identity.”

“Why?”

“Because Marcus needed Elena Sterling dead, but he needed the woman alive.”

Benjamin’s voice came through the receiver.

Record everything.

Elena’s phone was already active inside her coat.

“Why keep me alive?”

Marcus’s expression hardened.

Rowe smiled bitterly.

“Because only she could open the Meridian account.”

Victoria stared at Marcus.

“You told me the authorization was destroyed.”

“It was incomplete.”

Rowe continued.

“Elena’s father established a biometric trust before his death. Voice, fingerprints, retinal match, and a cognitive response sequence. Marcus could take her money only if she cooperated while believing she was someone else.”

Elena felt the platform tilt beneath her.

Her father had died when she was nineteen. He had left her a modest inheritance, or so she had been told.

“How much?”

Rowe looked at Marcus.

“Two hundred and forty million dollars.”

Victoria slapped Marcus.

The remote fell from his hand.

Chloe broke free and ran toward Elena.

A gunshot exploded.

Rowe staggered.

Marcus had drawn a weapon from beneath his jacket.

Reyes and Benjamin rushed onto the platform.

Victoria grabbed the remote from the ground.

“Everyone stop!”

Her thumb hovered over the button.

The tunnel shook.

A distant detonation rolled through the mountain.

Victoria’s face changed.

“I didn’t press it.”

A whistle screamed from inside the tunnel.

Lights appeared in the darkness.

May you like

Another train was coming toward them.

And Chloe was standing directly on the track.
