Chapter 3 - The Woman in the Classroom Window

Elena did not answer the note.
Benjamin warned that it could be a trap. Marcus might have discovered her identity and used Chloe to force her into the open.
But the next evening, another drawing appeared beneath the cart.
This one showed a red door beneath a staircase.
On the back were four words.
SHE LOCKS IT OUTSIDE.
Elena photographed the note and returned it exactly where she found it.
For two weeks, she watched.
Chloe arrived each morning in a black town car with Victoria. Marcus attended school functions when cameras were present but never came for ordinary pickups.
Victoria controlled every interaction.
She chose what Chloe ate.
Corrected the child’s posture by pressing a fingernail into her shoulder.
Answered questions directed at Chloe.
Once, when Chloe spoke to a classmate after dismissal, Victoria gripped the back of her neck and guided her toward the car with a smile.
The following day, Chloe wore a scarf high around her throat.
Elena needed more than suspicion.
She needed evidence.
Ashbourne Academy held a private family achievement meeting at the end of the term. Elena entered the second-floor corridor with a cleaning cart and positioned herself outside Chloe’s classroom.
Through the glass, she watched Victoria stand beside Marcus.
“My husband, Marcus, and I are so proud of Chloe,” Victoria said.
The word husband struck Elena like a slap.
Marcus smiled for the other parents.
Chloe sat at the end of the table, twisting her bracelet around her wrist.
After the meeting, Victoria approached her and bent close.
Elena activated the phone hidden inside her uniform pocket.
Victoria’s fingers disappeared beneath the table.
Chloe flinched.
“Keep your damn mouth shut,” Victoria whispered. “Or you’ll be locked up again.”
Marcus watched.
He did nothing.
When the family entered the hallway, Elena followed behind the cleaning cart.
Marcus grabbed Chloe’s wrist.
The child began trembling.
“Dad,” she whispered, “please don’t let her lock me in there again.”
Marcus glanced around before lowering his voice.
“You know what happens when you embarrass us.”
Elena’s vision narrowed.
She wanted to strike him.
Instead, she kept recording.
Near the exit, Officer Reyes rushed toward them holding a sealed envelope.
“We found something in Chloe’s locker.”
Inside were the photograph and brass key.
Then Chloe recognized Elena.
The lights went out.
Someone ripped the child from her arms.
Elena hit the floor as bodies moved around her.
She heard Officer Reyes shout for everyone to remain still.
A door slammed.
Emergency lights flickered on.
Marcus was gone.
So was Victoria.
So was Chloe.
Reyes seized Elena’s arm and pulled her upright.
“Which exit?”
“I couldn’t see.”
A second officer ran toward the east stairwell.
Reyes spoke into his radio, ordering the gates locked.
Then he looked directly at Elena.
“You’re supposed to be dead.”
“You knew who I was?”
“I suspected.”
He handed her the brass key.
The crescent symbol felt cold beneath her thumb.
“Where did you get this photograph?”
“It was inside the envelope.”
“Who gave you the envelope?”
“A student brought it to the security desk. He said he found it behind the lockers.”
“What student?”
“He disappeared before we could ask his name.”
Benjamin arrived twenty minutes later after Elena called from a locked office.
By then, police vehicles surrounded the academy.
The black town car used by the Sterlings remained in the parking lot.
Security footage showed Marcus carrying Chloe through the east service door while Victoria followed with a phone pressed to her ear.
A maintenance van left the grounds four minutes later.
The license plate belonged to a vehicle reported stolen six months earlier.
The police captain treated Elena as a suspect until Benjamin produced copies of her forged death certificate and clinic records.
When Elena played the hallway recording, the captain’s attitude changed.
An emergency child-abduction alert was prepared.
But before it could be issued, Marcus called the police himself.
He claimed Elena had attacked the family during a psychotic episode and abducted Chloe with help from corrupt school personnel.
The statement was released to the press.
Within an hour, Elena’s photograph appeared across every local channel beneath the words:
DANGEROUS WOMAN PREVIOUSLY PRESUMED DEAD.
“They’ll search for me instead of Chloe,” Elena said.
“That’s the point,” Benjamin replied.
Officer Reyes studied the photograph from the envelope.
“The room in this picture may be inside Halcyon House.”
Elena looked at the broken ballerina on the floor.
“I gave Chloe that music box on her fifth birthday.”
“Can the key open the room?”
“Possibly.”
Reyes shook his head.
“Marcus won’t take her somewhere we can connect to him.”
Elena examined the image more closely.
Behind the cot, barely visible beneath the red sweater, was a section of patterned tile.
She remembered the design.
Blue flowers surrounding a black diamond.
It was not from Halcyon House.
It came from the old Sterling family lodge beside Lake Bellweather, where Marcus had taken Elena during the last winter before her disappearance.
The lodge had officially burned down two years earlier.
But Elena remembered the basement.

And the red door beneath the staircase.
“They took Chloe to a house that no longer exists.”
