Chapter 7 - The Memory Under His Skin

Daniel woke in a guarded hospital room six hours later.

Doctors removed a small encrypted device from beneath his collarbone. It had been implanted beside a medical port and disguised in scans as scar tissue. The device contained thousands of compressed files, but accessing them required a biometric key based on Daniel's neurological responses.

Rachel sat beside his bed with fresh stitches in her abdomen. Claire slept in a chair near the window, one hand still wrapped around Daniel's red compass. Thomas occupied the room across the hall under federal protection.

Adrian was in surgery under armed guard. Dr. Voss had survived the gunshot but remained unconscious.

The state police commander apologized to Rachel three times. Rachel accepted none of them. The false alert had come through authenticated channels from Michael Soren's office. By dawn, Michael had disappeared.

Daniel watched Rachel with wary concentration.

"You look older," he said.

Rachel smiled through tears. "That happens in twelve years."

"I tried to remember your face. They showed me different photographs. Sometimes they said you were dead. Sometimes they said you had another son."

"There was never another son."

"Claire?"

"She looked for you too."

Claire stirred at the sound of her name. Daniel studied her.

"You used to hide my shoes."

Claire opened her eyes and laughed once before covering her mouth. "You used to put frogs in my backpack."

"Only twice."

"Seven times."

The exchange was small and ordinary. It broke Rachel more completely than the violence at the cabin. She turned toward the window until she could breathe again.

Daniel touched the scar beneath his collarbone. "The device has evidence about Dad."

"You said you remembered who killed him."

"Michael Soren came to the facility after Dad died. He showed me a photograph of the funeral and said grief had finished what they started. Later I heard Dr. Voss tell Adrian that Andrew Mercer had refused the settlement, so Soren arranged a natural event."

Rachel's hands went cold.

Andrew's heart attack had occurred after he received an anonymous message claiming Daniel was alive. He had driven six hours to meet the sender and returned shaken. Two days later he died.

"Do you remember where the meeting was?"

"A motel near Briar Glen. Dad saw me through a window. I saw him too. They would not let us speak."

Rachel closed her eyes.

Andrew had known Daniel was alive before he died. He had carried that truth alone, likely believing any attempt to tell Rachel would get their son killed.

Claire stood and moved to Rachel's side.

"We will prove it," she said.

A knock sounded. Attorney General investigators entered with a temporary special prosecutor appointed by the governor. Her name was Naomi Hart, a former federal judge known for disliking political theater.

Naomi placed a sealed order on the table.

"Rachel, you are suspended from official duties pending review of the vault breach. You are also a material witness."

"Understood."

"Michael Soren issued eleven emergency directives before disappearing. Some ordered the destruction of evidence connected to your investigation. We stopped eight. Three were completed."

Thomas appeared in the doorway, his shoulder immobilized.

"Which three?"

Naomi looked at him. "A storage facility burned. A server cluster was wiped. And a protected witness was transferred from county custody to an unknown federal unit."

"Which witness?" Rachel asked.

Naomi opened a folder.

The photograph inside showed a gray-haired woman Rachel knew immediately.

Evelyn Mercer, Rachel's mother.

Rachel had not spoken to Evelyn in four years. After Daniel's death, Evelyn became convinced Andrew was hiding something. She accused him publicly, then disappeared from family life. Rachel had believed grief and age had damaged her judgment.

Naomi said, "Your mother entered witness protection nine years ago under a sealed order signed by Michael Soren. Officially, she died last winter."

Claire whispered, "Grandma is alive?"

Daniel stared at the photograph.

"I know her," he said.

Rachel turned to him.

"From where?"

"She was at the facility. She called herself Nurse Gray."
