Chapter 6 - North Points Home

Rachel dragged Daniel behind a fuel cart as another shot tore through the metal above them. Claire broke free of the guard and dropped beside Rachel. Thomas, dazed but conscious, shouted for everyone to get down.
The private guards finally recognized the greater threat. They turned toward the fence and fired warning shots into the trees. Adrian disappeared behind the pines.
Sirens reached the airfield entrance.
State vehicles poured onto the runway. Officers formed positions around the hangar, weapons aimed at Rachel's group.
A loudspeaker ordered Rachel to release the hostage and place her hands on her head.
Daniel flinched at the word hostage.
Rachel stood slowly, shielding him with her body.
"My name is Rachel Mercer. This man is my son, Daniel Mercer, abducted twelve years ago. Dr. Lena Voss has been shot by Adrian Vale. Check the tree line."
The commanding officer repeated the order.
Thomas stepped into view holding his federal identification above his head. "Special Agent Thomas Reeve. Verify badge seven-four-one-nine."
An officer moved closer, recognized him, and hesitated.
That hesitation saved them.
Gunfire erupted from the far side of the runway. Adrian had reached a maintenance truck and was driving directly toward the jet. Officers turned. The truck smashed through a baggage cart, clipped the aircraft stairs, and stopped near the cockpit.
Adrian jumped out carrying the laptop from the cabin.
He ran toward the plane.
Rachel understood his intention. He no longer needed Daniel if he could leave with the Lark file and vault access.
Daniel grabbed her wrist. "There is a second copy."
"Where?"
He pointed at his own chest.
A thin surgical scar ran below his collarbone.
"They put it inside me."
Claire stared at him.
"A drive?"
"I don't know. Dr. Voss said I was the archive."
Rachel's fear shifted. Adrian had not aimed at Daniel merely to silence him. He had aimed at the evidence inside him.
The jet engines began to turn.
Thomas seized a radio from one of the guards and ordered the control tower to shut down the runway. The responding voice said the tower had received federal clearance for immediate departure.
"From whom?" Thomas demanded.
"Attorney General Soren's office."
Rachel felt the last of her doubt disappear.
Michael was involved.
Adrian reached the aircraft stairs. Rachel ran after him.
Claire shouted, but Rachel did not stop. Years of courtrooms had taught her that people revealed themselves when they believed the outcome was already decided. Adrian believed he had won. She needed him speaking, not escaping.
"Your father died for this?" she shouted.
Adrian turned at the top of the stairs.
"My father built this."
Officers aimed at him, but he held the laptop against his chest like a shield.
"Judge Vale kidnapped children?"
"He rescued assets from families too weak to use them."
The words carried across the open runway. Body cameras recorded every syllable.
Rachel climbed one stair.
"Daniel was nine."
"Daniel was exceptional. He remembered patterns after one exposure. He could identify voices through walls. He could reproduce documents after seeing them once. Your office wasted him with spelling tests and soccer practice."
Daniel stood behind Rachel now, trembling but upright.
"You told me my mother signed me away," he said.
Adrian looked at him.
"She did sign."
"Because you gave her a dead child to bury."
Adrian's expression hardened.
Daniel took another step. "You were afraid of me. That is why you changed my name. That is why you moved me every time I remembered."
The jet engines whined louder.
Rachel saw Thomas signaling to the pilot through the cockpit window. The pilot shook his head and reached for the controls.
Claire moved toward the plane's nose, unnoticed.
Adrian lifted the laptop. "Everything your government buried is on this machine. Judges. prosecutors. governors. donors. You arrest me, and it disappears."
"You already copied it," Rachel said. "You would never carry the only version into a firefight."
For the first time, Adrian looked uncertain.
Rachel continued. "The real archive is Daniel. You came for him, not the laptop."
Adrian's eyes shifted toward Daniel.
That was confirmation enough.
Claire reached the external emergency cutoff beneath the nose of the jet and pulled it. The engines wound down with a howl.
Adrian raised his rifle.
Thomas fired once.
The bullet struck Adrian's shoulder. He fell backward into the cabin, dropping the laptop onto the stairs. Officers rushed forward and pulled him out in handcuffs.
Rachel turned toward Daniel.
His face had gone white.

"Mom," he said. "I remember who killed Dad."
Then he collapsed.
