Chapter 4 - The Promise Claire Made

Emergency lights flickered red along the floor.
Rachel dropped behind the desk. The satellite phone skidded from her hand. Someone struck Adrian. Metal crashed against concrete. Claire shouted Thomas's name.
Then the generator returned, and the white lights came back all at once.
Adrian was gone.
A hidden door stood open behind the steel shelving.
Thomas lay on one knee with blood spreading across his shoulder. Claire was free from the chair, holding Adrian's pistol in both hands. She pointed it toward the open passage.
"He took the laptop," she said.
Rachel pushed herself upright.
"Did you shoot him?"
"No. He shot Thomas. I fired at the lights."
Thomas pressed his hand to the wound. "There is another exit through the old mine shaft. He will reach the road in six minutes."
Rachel picked up the satellite phone. The connection to Michael had ended.
"We need to call law enforcement."
"Not yet," Thomas said.
"You have thirty seconds to explain why I should trust you."
He looked at Claire.
Claire lowered the gun slowly.
"Because I called him," she said. "And because he found Daniel."
Rachel stared at her daughter.
Claire's performance finally broke. Her shoulders shook. She crossed the room and caught Rachel before Rachel could fall.
"I'm sorry," Claire whispered. "Mom, I'm so sorry. I had to make Adrian believe I blamed you. He watched me for months. He said he would kill Daniel if I warned you."
Rachel held her despite the pain.
"You saw him?"
"Only on video. Three weeks ago."
Claire pulled a thin memory card from beneath the lining of her shirt. "Thomas gave me this. Daniel was alive when it was recorded. He knew my name. He remembered the tree house. He remembered the song you used to sing when the power went out."
Rachel looked at Thomas.
"Where is my son?"
"I do not know now. I located a facility in Tennessee eight months ago. Daniel had been moved by the time I reached it. I recovered records proving he survived the river incident. Adrian discovered my search, so I disappeared and entered his network under a false offer of cooperation."
"You let Claire come here."
"I tried to stop her. Adrian had already taken her. She convinced him she hated you and offered to bring you in. It was the only reason he kept her alive."
Claire stepped back, tears cutting clean lines down her face.
"He made me practice the accusation. He wanted me to stab you on camera. Thomas taught me where to aim."
Rachel closed her eyes. The wound burned, but the greater pain was imagining Claire alone with that choice.
"You saved me," she said.
Claire shook her head. "I hurt you."
"You saved me."
Thomas struggled to stand. "The vault Adrian opened contains the witness index, but what he wanted was not the names. It was one sealed file connected to Daniel. Rachel, your office has been holding it without knowing what it is."
"What file?"
"Project Lark."
The name meant nothing to Rachel, but Claire reacted.
"Adrian used that word in his sleep," she said. "He said Lark was the only child who remembered before conditioning."
Thomas crossed to the wall of photographs and removed one taken at Daniel's grave. Behind it was a small control panel. He entered a code, and a section of concrete slid aside, revealing a narrow evidence room.
Inside stood filing cabinets, computers, and a long table covered with photographs of children.
Some were marked deceased. Others had new names written beneath their original ones.
Rachel found Daniel's photograph near the center.
Original identity: Daniel Mercer.
Assigned identity: Elias Ward.
Classification: LARK.
Status: ACTIVE TRANSFER.
Claire gripped Rachel's arm.
Below the status line was a date.
Today's date.
And a destination.
Port Mason Airfield.
Thomas checked his watch. "The transfer leaves in forty-two minutes."
Rachel took the gun from Claire, handed it to Thomas, and pulled the bandage tighter around her waist.
"Then we have forty-one minutes to get there."
Outside, the utility vehicle's engine was still running. Thomas climbed into the passenger seat because his injured arm had begun to fail. Claire drove. Rachel sat in the back with the files spread across her knees.
The road twisted down the mountain. Snow struck the windshield. Claire drove faster than Rachel had ever seen her drive.
"Tell me everything," Rachel said.
Thomas explained that Adrian's organization had operated through private youth programs and emergency foster placements for nearly twenty years. Children with particular psychological traits were declared dead, abandoned, or unfit. Their identities were changed. Some were trained as couriers, observers, or infiltrators. Others disappeared into wealthy families that paid for children with fabricated histories.
"Daniel was taken because of you," Thomas said.
Rachel felt the words like another blade.
"Why?"
"You were a young prosecutor building a case against Judge Everett Vale. Adrian's father. The organization believed a threat against your child would force you to abandon the case. But Daniel saw the men who took him. He remembered Adrian. They could not return him, and they could not release him."
Rachel remembered the case. Judge Vale had died before indictment. The evidence had vanished. She had believed her investigation failed because she was inexperienced.
"Who protected them?"
Thomas looked at the road ahead.
"Someone inside your office. Someone with authority high enough to seal the Lark file for twelve years."
Rachel thought of Michael Soren answering the phone on the fourth ring.
He had understood the distress code.
He had also granted access within seconds.
May you like
The satellite phone rang in Rachel's hand.
Michael's name appeared on the screen.
