Chapter 13 - The Brother Who Was Buried First

Samuel Mercer had been declared dead twenty-eight years earlier after a laboratory explosion at a military research center. Andrew rarely spoke of him. Rachel knew only that Samuel had been brilliant, unstable, and obsessed with memory research.

Now he stood aboard the Mercy Bell as the architect of the system that destroyed Andrew's family.

"Andrew thought you were dead," Rachel said.

"Andrew needed to believe he had escaped me."

Samuel's pistol remained aimed at Daniel. "Our family carried an unusual neurological trait. Pattern retention, emotional indexing, sensory recall. I recognized it in Andrew when we were children. I recognized it in Daniel from school assessments."

"So you kidnapped your nephew."

"I preserved the work."

Daniel stepped forward. "You tortured me."

Samuel's expression held genuine curiosity. "And yet you remain yourself. Do you understand how important that is?"

Claire appeared behind a glass partition with two children. Samuel touched a control, locking her in.

Thomas and Sophie were trapped in the adjacent room. Tactical teams were still forcing access from the upper decks.

Rachel positioned herself between Samuel and Daniel.

"Release them."

"You have something I require."

"The archive key?"

"No. Daniel has always been the key. I require your consent."

Rachel almost laughed. "You built an empire on kidnapping, and now you care about consent?"

"Not moral consent. Neurological consent. Daniel's memory structure resists extraction when he perceives threat. He opens when he believes he is returning home. You are the trigger."

Samuel planned to use Rachel to unlock Daniel's memories and copy the network archive into another child.

The migration chamber waited behind him, filled with medical equipment and a reclining chair sized for Sophie.

Thomas saw it and attacked the partition until his injured shoulder failed.

Samuel ordered Rachel and Daniel inside the chamber.

Rachel obeyed because Naomi's voice in her earpiece had gone silent. Either the signal was blocked or the team had lost access. She needed time.

Daniel sat in the chair beside Sophie. Electrodes were attached to their temples. Rachel was placed before them, a camera focused on her face.

Samuel activated the system.

Images from Daniel's childhood appeared on surrounding screens: the Mercer kitchen, the tree house, Andrew's watch, Claire laughing with missing front teeth, Rachel singing by flashlight during a storm.

Daniel began to shake.

"Tell him to come home," Samuel ordered.

Rachel looked into her son's eyes.

"Home is not a place someone can force you to enter," she said. "Home is where no one owns your memories."

Samuel struck a control. Sophie cried out as current passed through the electrodes.

Thomas roared from behind the glass.

"Say it correctly," Samuel demanded.

Rachel held Daniel's gaze. "North points home. But you decide where north is."

Daniel stopped shaking.

The screens flickered.

Lines of code appeared instead of memories.

Samuel leaned toward the console.

Daniel smiled faintly.

"Nurse Gray taught me something else."

"What?"

"Never show the other side all your evidence."

The implanted device had not only stored files. Daniel had learned to manipulate its response through rehearsed memory patterns. He sent the migration system a loop containing corrupted versions of the network archive.

Alarms spread across the ship. Locked doors opened. Security cameras turned toward private medical rooms. Files began uploading to public servers through the ship's satellite connection.

Samuel lunged for the console.

Rachel struck him with the metal electrode stand. The pistol fell. Claire broke through her unlocked partition and kicked it away.

Thomas reached Sophie and tore off the electrodes.

Samuel tackled Daniel. They crashed against the chamber wall. Rachel grabbed Samuel's coat, but he threw her aside and reached for a syringe.

Claire caught his wrist.

For one terrible second Rachel saw the cabin again: Claire holding a blade, pretending hatred, terrified and brave.

This time Claire did not have to pretend.

She drove Samuel's hand into the steel table until the syringe broke.

Tactical officers flooded the chamber.

Samuel was forced to the floor and handcuffed.

The ship's departure was canceled. Every child was removed. The public saw live evidence of hidden wards, false identities, and medical abuse before any official could suppress it.

By sunrise, the Vale network no longer belonged to rumor.

May you like

It belonged to history.

Yet as Samuel was led away, he looked at Rachel and said, "You believe this began with me. Ask Evelyn who selected Andrew."
