Chapter 3 - The Agent Who Came Alone

Thomas Reeve entered the basement without raising his hands.

He wore a dark coat dusted with snow and carried no visible weapon. His hair had grown longer since Rachel last saw him, and a scar ran from the corner of his mouth into his beard. He looked exhausted, but not surprised to find Rachel bleeding beside the desk.

Adrian kept the pistol aimed at Claire.

"You're late," he said.

"The road was blocked."

"You were told to keep Mercer away from this place."

Thomas looked at Rachel. His expression gave her nothing.

"She found the financial channel," he said. "Once that happened, containment was impossible."

Rachel's hope collapsed. Thomas was not a rescuer. He was another part of the machine.

Adrian tossed him a roll of bandage.

"Keep her alive."

Thomas approached Rachel. He knelt, lifted the edge of her shirt, and examined the wound.

"The blade entered below the ribs and angled outward," he said. "She avoided the liver."

Claire closed her eyes.

Adrian glanced at her sharply.

"Luck."

"Perhaps."

Thomas wrapped the bandage tightly around Rachel's abdomen. As he worked, his fingers pressed twice against her wrist, paused, then pressed four times.

Twelve-four.

Rachel kept her face still.

He knew Claire's signal.

Thomas finished the bandage and stood.

"The vault requires biometric confirmation," he told Adrian. "A signature and token will not be enough."

"I know."

Adrian removed a small camera from the folder. "Rachel will provide the face scan after she records her statement."

Thomas moved behind Claire's chair as though checking the restraint. His sleeve brushed her shoulder. Claire inhaled but did not look at him.

Rachel understood then that the vehicle outside had not arrived by accident. Claire had planned for Thomas to come. Yet Thomas's role remained unclear. He spoke like Adrian's subordinate, but his touch had repeated the code.

Adrian set up the camera.

"Begin with your name and title."

Rachel sat before the lens.

"My name is Rachel Mercer. I am deputy attorney general for the state of North Carolina."

"Tell the truth about Daniel."

Rachel looked directly into the camera.

"Twelve years ago, my nine-year-old son disappeared during a school retreat near Blackwater River. I was shown a body I could not identify and pressured to sign documents before an independent examination could occur."

Adrian struck her across the mouth.

"Again."

Blood touched Rachel's tongue.

Thomas said, "She needs to sound coherent. Bruising her face creates questions."

Adrian's eyes shifted toward him.

"You have become sentimental."

"I have become careful."

For several seconds neither man moved.

Then Adrian smiled and stepped away.

Rachel began again. This time she followed his script, but altered small details. She stated the date as December 4, though Daniel disappeared on December 14. She called the river Blackstone instead of Blackwater. She identified the cabin as being in Virginia, though they were in North Carolina.

Twelve-four. December fourth.

A distress marker used by their office in coerced recordings. Any statement containing three verifiable date or location errors would trigger mandatory review before it could be admitted or released.

Thomas had designed the protocol after a prosecutor was kidnapped years earlier.

Claire must have learned it from him.

Adrian did not notice.

When Rachel finished, he brought the biometric camera close to her face. A green light swept over her eyes.

A laptop on the desk displayed ACCESS PENDING.

"Now the token," Adrian said.

Rachel removed the small black device from her coat pocket. It showed six digits that changed every thirty seconds.

She read them aloud.

Adrian typed.

The screen changed to SECOND OFFICER AUTHORIZATION REQUIRED.

His calm expression cracked.

"What did you do?"

"Nothing. The witness index is protected by dual control."

"Whose authorization?"

Rachel knew the answer. The second officer was Attorney General Michael Soren, her mentor and the man who had assigned her the corruption case.

Before she could speak, Thomas said, "Soren."

Adrian swore.

Claire looked from Thomas to Rachel, fear widening her eyes.

Adrian paced once around the desk, then grabbed Claire's bound wrist and twisted until she cried out.

"Call him," he ordered Rachel.

"The phone upstairs is disconnected."

Thomas removed a satellite phone from his coat.

Adrian stared at him.

"You came prepared."

"You told me ninety seconds."

Rachel took the phone. She knew Michael's private number by memory. He had been present at every important threshold of her career: her first felony conviction, Andrew's funeral, Claire's college acceptance, the anniversary dinners Rachel attended because staying home felt worse. Michael had told her grief could be converted into service. He had praised her strength until she mistook his proximity for loyalty. The suspicion that he might be connected to Adrian did not arrive as a single shock. It arrived as a rearrangement of a thousand ordinary moments, each one suddenly capable of carrying another meaning. As she entered the number, Thomas shifted slightly, placing himself between Adrian and a metal cabinet.

The call connected on the fourth ring.

"Rachel?" Michael answered. "Where are you?"

Adrian held the pistol against Claire's temple.

Rachel said, "I'm at the Blackstone cabin in Virginia. Daniel disappeared on December fourth. I need you to authorize the witness index."

Silence.

Michael understood all three errors.

"Of course," he said carefully. "Read me the request code."

Adrian looked at the laptop.

Rachel read the code.

Michael gave his credentials.

ACCESS GRANTED appeared on the screen.

Adrian exhaled.

Then every light in the basement went out.

In the darkness, Claire screamed.

A gun fired twice.
