Chapter 9 - Melissa’s Return

The criminal case took several months.

During that time, Emma filed for an annulment based on fraud and deception. She refused every settlement Ryan offered.

Melissa reopened her financial case. Natalie joined the investigation, and Chloe moved into her own apartment using money she earned at a new job rather than anything connected to Ryan.

The women did not become instant friends.

Their relationships were complicated by pain, guilt, and years of silence.

But they continued meeting.

Sometimes they discussed court documents. Other times they sat quietly over coffee and talked about ordinary things Ryan had once made impossible.

Melissa eventually told Emma why she returned to Columbus.

A former neighbor had contacted her after seeing photographs from Ryan’s wedding online.

The neighbor recognized Emma and became worried.

Melissa searched for more information and discovered Ryan had married again only days earlier. She contacted her former attorney, who alerted local authorities that Ryan might be violating unresolved legal orders.

“When Chloe gave my name to the dispatcher, the police called me,” Melissa explained. “I was already driving toward the city.”

Emma thought about the timing.

Had Chloe waited another week, Ryan might have gained access to more accounts. Had Melissa remained afraid, investigators might never have understood the pattern.

Each woman had acted at the last possible moment.

Together, those moments became enough.

Ryan eventually accepted a plea agreement involving assault, fraud, identity-related offenses, witness intimidation, and violations connected to Melissa’s protection order.

He received a substantial prison sentence and was ordered to pay restitution.

The townhouse was sold under court supervision.

The money recovered from the sale went first to Melissa and Natalie for documented losses.

Emma wanted nothing from the property.

She only wanted her name separated from Ryan’s forever.
