Chapter 5 - The Locked Office

Ryan was released the next afternoon while prosecutors reviewed the case, but a temporary order prevented him from returning to the townhouse.
Emma refused to stay there alone.
Chloe packed two bags and joined her at a hotel. Melissa stayed nearby, unwilling to leave them unprotected.
The following morning, Emma returned to the townhouse with a police escort to collect her belongings.
While walking past Ryan’s office, she noticed something unusual.
The office door was locked.
Ryan had never allowed her inside without him. He claimed it contained confidential work documents.
Emma remembered seeing him place her insurance statements, tax records, and investment reports inside that room.
The officer told her she could retrieve property belonging to her, but they could not force open a locked door without authorization.
Emma called her attorney.
By evening, the attorney obtained an emergency order allowing Emma to recover financial documents that Ryan had taken without permission.
A locksmith opened the door.
Inside, Emma found more than office files.
There were folders containing copies of her bank statements, retirement accounts, property records, and life insurance information. One document showed that Ryan had attempted to change the beneficiary on a policy Emma had owned before meeting him.
Another folder contained records belonging to Melissa.
There were old medical forms, credit reports, and documents carrying signatures Melissa claimed were not hers.
Then Emma found a blue notebook.
Each page listed dates, arguments, apologies, gifts, and personal details about the women Ryan had dated.
Beside Emma’s name, he had written:
Independent. Financially secure. Responds well to responsibility. Difficult when challenged. Marriage should reduce resistance.
Emma felt sick.
Melissa turned several pages and stopped.
Beside her own name was a final note.
Legal threat unresolved. Maintain death narrative.
Chloe covered her mouth.
Emma photographed every page.
“This isn’t only about what happened in the kitchen,” she said.
May you like
Melissa nodded.
“It never was.”
