MELISSA NEVER DIED / Chapter 1 / 10

Chapter 1 - Three Days After the Wedding

Three nights earlier, Emma had believed she was the luckiest woman in Ohio.

She and Ryan had returned from their small wedding at a lakeside hotel surrounded by white candles, soft music, and forty smiling guests. Ryan had carried her suitcase into the townhouse, kissed her beneath the hallway light, and told her the home finally felt complete.

Emma had wanted to believe him.

She had spent most of her adult life building stability. She worked as a financial investigator for an insurance company, owned her car, paid her bills early, and never depended on anyone to rescue her.

Ryan had admired that when they first met.

“You’re different from anyone I’ve known,” he had told her.

At the time, she thought it was a compliment.

Ryan was charming, organized, and attentive. He remembered the smallest details, from the tea she drank to the music she played while cooking. When her mother became ill, he drove Emma to every hospital appointment.

Yet there had always been strange moments.

He disliked being questioned. He became silent whenever Emma mentioned his first wife. He insisted Melissa had died in an accident five years earlier but refused to discuss where she was buried.

Emma assumed the subject was too painful.

Ryan’s younger sister, Chloe, had lived with him since losing her job. She was twenty-four, quiet, and constantly anxious around her brother. During the wedding, Emma had noticed Chloe watching Ryan whenever he put his arm around Emma.

It had not looked like jealousy.

It had looked like fear.

On the third evening after the wedding, Emma prepared dinner for the three of them.

She hoped it would feel like the beginning of a family.

Instead, it became the moment every lie started collapsing.
