Chapter 7 - The Price of Chloe’s Silence

Chloe’s confession was the most difficult.
She admitted that Ryan had pressured her to support his lies about Melissa. He rehearsed what she should say whenever relatives asked questions.
Later, when Emma entered Ryan’s life, Chloe tried to warn her indirectly.
She left Melissa’s photograph where Emma might find it. She asked why there was no grave. She repeatedly told Emma not to combine finances too quickly.
But every time Ryan noticed Chloe becoming close to Emma, he threatened to throw her out.
“I told myself I was protecting myself until I could leave,” Chloe said. “But I kept waiting.”
Emma was angry.
She understood Chloe’s fear, yet she could not ignore the consequences of her silence.
“You watched me marry him.”
Chloe lowered her head.
“Yes.”
“You stood beside me at the ceremony.”
“I know.”
“And you said nothing.”
Tears ran down Chloe’s face.
“I thought he had changed because he hadn’t acted like that in years. I wanted to believe Melissa was the exception.”
Melissa spoke gently but firmly.
“That is what people like Ryan depend on. Everyone wants to believe the last woman caused the problem.”
Chloe agreed to testify, even though doing so meant admitting that she had repeated false claims.
Ryan’s attorney contacted her that same evening.
He offered to pay for an apartment and cover her living expenses if she refused to cooperate.
Chloe recorded the conversation.
The attorney quickly ended the call when she asked whether Ryan was offering money in exchange for silence.
Chloe gave the recording to investigators.
