Chapter 7 - The Man in the Dark
Daniel moved toward the staircase.
Linda grabbed his arm.
"Don't."
He stopped.
"Why?"
"Because your father was afraid of that sound."
Daniel looked upstairs.
Another noise.
A drawer opening.
Then footsteps.
Someone was inside the house.
Daniel quietly moved toward the kitchen.
He picked up his phone.
No signal.
Linda whispered:
"There's another exit."
They moved through the back door.
Outside, Daniel saw a shadow crossing the upstairs window.
Then the figure disappeared.
Minutes later, police arrived.
The house was searched.
Nothing was stolen.
Except one thing.
Richard's second letter.
Daniel looked at Linda.
"You knew where it was."
She nodded.
"It was hidden in the house."
"Where?"
"In your father's old safe."
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because I was afraid."
"Of what?"
Linda looked at him.
"Of what the letter would prove."
Daniel stared at the broken upstairs window.
He suddenly understood.
