Chapter 12 - The Person Behind the Door

The lights returned.
Nobody stood there.
Daniel rushed to the door.
Locked.
He searched the room.
A speaker was hidden behind the wall.
A recording.
Someone had planned everything.
Then the speaker activated again.
"You think your family betrayed you."
Daniel stared at the ceiling.
"They did."
"You think Ethan was the enemy."
Daniel looked at Ethan.
"He wasn't."
"You think your father died without telling you the truth."
Daniel swallowed.
"He left pieces."
"Pieces are dangerous."
Daniel stepped toward the speaker.
"Show yourself."
A laugh echoed.
"Not yet."
The speaker went silent.
Ethan found another box.
Inside was a newspaper clipping.
It reported Richard Carter's death.
But Daniel noticed something strange.
The article claimed Richard had died peacefully.
The medical report said otherwise.
Daniel's eyes narrowed.
"Something is wrong."
Ethan nodded.
"What?"
Daniel pointed at the date.
"The report was signed before my father died."
Ethan's face went pale.
Someone had prepared the paperwork early.
Daniel looked at him.
"My father wasn't supposed to die when he did."
The basement became silent.
Then Daniel's phone vibrated.
One new message.
Your father didn't die by accident.
Daniel stared at the screen.
May you like
Another message appeared.
And neither did the person who killed him.
