Chapter 4 - Where He Learned to Breathe

The old swimming center had been abandoned years earlier.
Daniel stood outside its locked entrance that evening.
He remembered every tile.
Every lane.
Every morning.
He had learned to swim there before he had learned to understand his own family.
He forced the door open.
Inside, dust covered the pool deck.
The water was gone.
Daniel walked to the edge.
Nothing.
He checked beneath the starting blocks.
Nothing.
He searched the locker room.
Nothing.
Then he remembered his father's words.
Where you learned to breathe.
Not where you learned to swim.
Where you learned to breathe.
Daniel looked at the old diving platform.
He remembered his first lesson.
His coach had taught him to float.
"Stop fighting the water," Miller had said.
"Trust it."
Daniel walked toward the deepest end.
There was an old maintenance panel beneath the platform.
He opened it.
Inside was a small metal box.
His hands began shaking.
He pulled it out.
The box contained photographs.
Bank statements.
Copies of contracts.
And a small flash drive.
Daniel stared at the documents.
The first photograph showed Ethan.
The second showed Patricia.
The third showed Richard.
But the fourth photograph stopped Daniel cold.
It showed Daniel himself.
At sixteen.
Standing beside his swimming coach.
On the back of the photograph was a date.
The same day Daniel had been thrown out.
Daniel's breathing became shallow.
Why had his father photographed him that day?
He opened the first document.
It was a financial agreement.
Richard Carter had transferred a large amount of money to a company Daniel had never heard of.
The company was connected to Ethan's father.
Daniel kept reading.
Then he found something that made his blood run cold.
A clause involving Daniel's athletic career.
His scholarship.
And his future earnings.
Someone had been planning to control Daniel's career before he was even old enough to understand what a contract meant.
Daniel grabbed the flash drive.
He turned around.
May you like
Someone was standing behind him.
Ethan.
