Chapter 14 - The Uncle Who Wasn't Dead
Daniel spent the entire night searching.
There was almost no public record of his uncle.
No recent photographs.
No address.
No business registration.
Nothing.
Then Ethan found something.
A company listed under a different surname.
The owner was a man named Jonathan Reed.
Daniel opened the company profile.
The photograph appeared.
It was him.
Richard's supposedly dead brother.
Jonathan.
Daniel felt a strange mixture of anger and relief.
Finally, someone connected to the past was alive.
They drove to the company's registered address.
The building was empty.
But someone had left a package inside.
Daniel opened it.
A letter.
His uncle had written it.
Daniel,
If you've reached this point, then Richard is dead and Linda has finally told you enough.
But there is one thing they both never understood.
You were never supposed to inherit the family business.
You were supposed to inherit something much more dangerous.
Daniel turned the page.
The final paragraph had been blacked out.
Only one sentence remained visible.
The person who controls the Carter Foundation controls the evidence.
Daniel stared at the words.
"What foundation?"
Ethan looked at him.
"I've heard of it."
"Where?"
"Your father created it years ago."
Daniel frowned.
"I've never heard of it."
Ethan shook his head.
"That's the point."
Daniel suddenly heard footsteps outside.
Someone was approaching.
He turned toward the door.
A man entered.
Older.
Gray-haired.
With Richard's eyes.
Daniel froze.
The man looked at him.
"I'm Jonathan."
Daniel stared.
"You were supposed to be dead."
Jonathan gave a tired smile.
"Your father wanted everyone to believe that."
"Why?"
Jonathan's expression became serious.
"Because the people who are looking for you believe you inherited the wrong thing."
Daniel stepped forward.
"What did I inherit?"
Jonathan looked at the medal in Daniel's hand.
"Not the medal."
