Chapter 8 - Nursery Zero

The tunnel began behind the Archive's farthest shelf.

It had no handle, only a shallow indentation shaped like the brass key Rose carried for twenty-eight years. When she inserted it, locks opened one after another beneath the wall.

Cold air moved through the gap.

Valerie wanted Rose upstairs under medical supervision. Rose refused.

"I lost one daughter because men told me to wait in a safe room," she said. "I will not wait again."

They descended together: Valerie, Rose, Celeste, Bell, and Detective Ortiz with four officers.

The tunnel walls were lined with white tiles yellowed by age. Small speakers hung near the ceiling. At intervals, faded numbers appeared beneath layers of paint.

A.

B.

C-1.

Noah's designation.

Valerie fought the urge to run back upstairs and hold him. Two armed guards remained outside his room. The mansion was locked down.

Still, she felt watched.

At the first junction, they found a dormitory.

Six iron beds. Child-sized restraints. Cabinets filled with uniforms in different sizes. One wall displayed photographs of Valerie from infancy to adulthood.

Some pictures had been taken through windows.

Others could only have been taken inside her home.

Rose touched a photograph of Valerie holding newborn Noah.

Behind her in the image stood Eleanor, smiling.

Celeste opened a desk drawer and found cassette tapes labeled with dates. On one, a child's handwriting said VICTORIA LESSON 4.

She inserted it into an old player.

A young girl's voice recited Valerie's life.

"My favorite color is green. My grandfather calls me Little Star. I am afraid of deep water. I broke my arm at seven."

The voice belonged to Celeste.

She stopped the tape.

"No more."

Farther down, the tunnel divided toward Mark's house. Police found a concealed elevator opening into the pantry where Noah had once been locked. Eleanor could move between properties without crossing the street.

Valerie remembered nights when doors clicked downstairs and Mark insisted the old house was settling.

They reached Nursery Zero at 11:43 p.m.

The chamber was not a nursery.

It was a theater.

Rows of seats faced a circular platform beneath bright surgical lamps. Glass observation booths ringed the room. A black crest had been painted on the floor.

At the center stood six empty cribs.

A monitor flickered to life.

A masked figure appeared.

"Welcome, heirs."

Ortiz raised her weapon. "Trace the signal."

The figure ignored her.

"Conrad Ashford believed blood created continuity. Adrian Vale believed memory created identity. Both were wrong. Continuity belongs to institutions."

Celeste stepped forward. "Who are you?"

"You knew me as Director Gray."

Celeste's control cracked. "You died in the fire."

"Names die. Systems do not."

Valerie looked at the empty cribs. "You are not getting my son."

"Your son was never the primary objective."

The monitor displayed a live image of Noah asleep in the mansion.

Then the camera widened.

The guards outside his room lay unconscious.

A woman in a nurse's uniform stood beside his bed.

Valerie ran.

The tunnel lights shut off.

Gunfire exploded in the dark.

She hit the wall, felt Rose's hand tear away from hers, and heard Bell shout her name. Emergency lights flickered red.

Celeste grabbed Valerie's arm.

"Up the service ladder."

"What about my mother?"

"I'll get her."

"No."

A scream echoed behind them.

Not Rose.

Eleanor.

The lights returned.

Eleanor stood on the theater platform holding Noah. A pistol pressed against his ribs.

Rose knelt nearby, bleeding from the temple.

Eleanor smiled.

"I told you," she said. "Your mother never learned gratitude."

Valerie stopped breathing.

Eleanor backed toward a steel door.

"Open the transfer account," she ordered. "Release ten million dollars and all Ashford shares assigned to Subject B."

Celeste looked at her.

"You sold me once," she said.

May you like

Eleanor's smile widened.

"And I can sell you again."
