Chapter 10 - The Man Behind the Mask

The police found no trace of Director Gray.

The steel door opened into a transit shaft connected to storm drains beneath Crestwood. Thermal cameras picked up three moving figures, then lost them near the river.

Eleanor was arrested for kidnapping, attempted murder, conspiracy, identity trafficking, and crimes connected to Meridian House. In the back of the police car, she demanded a lawyer and called Valerie ungrateful until the door closed.

Noah slept between Valerie and Rose in the mansion's family room.

Celeste sat across from them, still wearing Eleanor's blood on her sleeve.

Bell stood near the fireplace under guard.

Detective Ortiz had not arrested him, but two officers remained close.

"You helped Conrad fake his death," Valerie said.

"Yes."

"You let my mother believe she killed him."

"Conrad insisted the illusion had to be complete."

"Why?"

"Because the person rebuilding Meridian had access to every Ashford communication. If Rose knew, she could be forced to reveal it."

Rose looked at Bell with exhausted hatred. "You allowed me to carry that guilt for half my life."

"I believed it protected you."

"Protection without consent is another prison."

Bell accepted that.

He explained that Conrad survived under the name Victor Adrian Vale, the same identity later placed on Valerie's false passport. For eleven months he traveled between Meridian facilities, moving children, records, and money. Then he vanished for real.

"Did he die?" Valerie asked.

"I do not know."

Celeste opened the ledger. Several pages had been cut out cleanly.

"The missing pages list active subjects," she said. "Gray did not come for the ledger because he already had what he needed."

"What did he need?"

She pointed toward the surveillance screen showing the empty underground chamber.

"Proof that both heirs were alive and in the same place."

Bell looked sharply at her. "Founders' Night."

Celeste nodded.

The phrase did not refer to a deadline. It referred to a ritual within Meridian governance. Every twenty-eight years, control transferred to a new pair of custodians selected from a founder's bloodline.

Twins.

Valerie felt ill.

"The program was waiting for us?"

"It was built around us," Celeste said.

Rose held Noah tighter.

At dawn, federal agents arrived. The Ashford estate was sealed as a crime scene. News vans gathered outside the gates. Mark watched coverage from his hospital room, where prosecutors offered him limited immunity in exchange for cooperation.

He accepted before the paperwork was printed.

His first statement exposed dozens of shell companies used to move Ashford funds into Meridian accounts. His second implicated Eleanor in plans to remove Valerie after the seventh anniversary. His third described a private club where businessmen purchased "legacy insurance" in the form of trained substitute heirs.

But his fourth statement changed everything.

Mark claimed he had met Director Gray without the mask.

He identified him as Dr. Adrian Vale.

Celeste refused to believe it.

"Adrian saved me."

"Maybe he saved you to use you later," Bell said.

She struck him.

Valerie stepped between them.

That afternoon, a body was recovered from the river. The face was badly damaged. Dental records identified the dead man as Adrian Vale.

The estimated time of death was forty-eight hours earlier.

Before Director Gray appeared in Nursery Zero.

Someone had used a dead man's name and face for decades.

Ortiz brought Valerie a plastic evidence bag found inside the man's coat.

It contained a photograph.

Conrad Ashford stood beside Rose in a garden. Two teenage girls stood in front of them.

Valerie and Celeste.

The photograph was dated ten years before Valerie met her sister.

On the back were the words:

FIRST REUNION FAILED.

SECOND REUNION MUST NOT.

Beneath that was an address in the mountains.

Rose recognized it.

"The Ashford summer estate," she said.

Bell shook his head. "That property burned down twenty years ago."

Celeste stared at the date.

"No," she said. "Meridian told us it burned."

May you like

Valerie looked at the photograph again.

In the background, watching from an upstairs window, was a third girl with the same face.
