Chapter 4 - Subject B

The woman's name was Celeste Vale.

She refused to surrender the gun hidden beneath her coat until Valerie ordered the security officers to lower theirs. Bell objected. Rose begged. Noah cried from the stairs.

Celeste laughed when she heard the child's voice.

"So Conrad's golden heir has a son."

Valerie studied her. The scar above Celeste's eyebrow matched one Valerie had received falling from a horse at age nine. Impossible, unless someone had copied it.

"Why do you look like me?"

"Because men with money are rarely satisfied with nature."

Celeste placed a leather case on the floor and kicked it toward Bell. Inside were medical files, photographs, and a small vial labeled V-A2.

Bell opened the first file.

Twin female infants. Same birth date as Valerie. Same mother: Rose Mercer. One infant listed as transferred to Meridian Pediatric Research under authorization signed by Conrad Ashford.

Rose covered her mouth.

Celeste's voice remained flat. "He did not give me away. He funded the institution that raised me."

"Meridian House," Valerie said.

"Not a charity. A program."

Celeste explained in fragments. Children from wealthy bloodlines were studied for obedience, memory, stress tolerance, and what the reports called adaptive identity. Some were trained to replace heirs in cases of kidnapping, scandal, death, or instability. They learned signatures, speech patterns, childhood histories.

Valerie looked at the matching scar.

"They made you into me."

"They tried."

"Why?"

"Because Conrad feared you would fail him."

Rose began to cry.

Celeste did not comfort her.

At age twelve, Celeste escaped during a fire at Meridian House. Dr. Adrian Vale, the physician who helped her, gave her his surname. He documented the program and tried to expose it. Weeks later he was declared dead in a boating accident.

"He survived," Rose said.

"For a while."

Celeste looked toward the library.

"He hid the evidence in the Black Archive. Conrad learned the truth too late, or pretended to. Before he died, he created the second will as restitution."

Bell closed the medical file. "If this is authentic, why come now?"

"Because the Archive opened."

"How did you know?"

Celeste smiled without warmth. "The system told every surviving Meridian subject."

Valerie thought of the message.

SHE IS NOT ALONE.

"How many?"

"At least six."

A security alarm sounded.

This time the breach came from the service road behind the estate. Cameras showed a black van approaching the lower gate. Its plates were registered to Mark's construction company.

Mark stepped out first with his lawyer. Eleanor followed, carrying a folder. Behind them stood two men in county uniforms.

Bell cursed softly. "A court order."

The order required Valerie to permit an inspection of the property related to a probate fraud claim. It had been signed less than an hour earlier.

"Mark cannot get that quickly," Valerie said.

Celeste moved to the window. "Mark is not the problem."

"Then who is?"

"The person who paid him to marry you."

Valerie turned.

Celeste removed a photograph from her coat and placed it on the table.

It showed Mark seven years earlier, seated in a private restaurant with Conrad Ashford.

The date printed in the corner was three weeks before Mark first approached Valerie at a charity gala.

On the back, in Conrad's handwriting, was a single sentence.

Candidate approved.

Valerie felt something inside her become very calm.

"He was chosen?"

"Selected, evaluated, and financed," Celeste said. "Your marriage was never an accident."

Outside, Mark looked up toward the library window as if he knew exactly where she stood.

Then he lifted his phone.

Valerie's phone rang.

She answered.

Mark's voice was cheerful.

"Open the gate, sweetheart. Or I tell everyone what your mother did to get you that inheritance."

"What did she do?"

May you like

His smile widened below.

"She killed Conrad Ashford."
