Chapter 13 - The Board of Ghosts

Valerie walked to the empty chair opposite Evelyn.

The board members avoided her eyes.

On the wall behind them, the Ashford crest had been altered. The familiar silver tree now had three roots, each marked with a letter: P, R, C.

Primary. Reserve. Correction.

Evelyn opened a folder.

"Under the second will, the estate is divided among qualified heirs. Valerie Ashford concealed the existence of Subject B, mismanaged protected assets, and triggered emergency continuity provisions without board approval."

"You kidnapped my family," Valerie said.

"That is not on the agenda."

"Where are they?"

"Safe, until the vote."

Bell placed a biometric pad on the table. Valerie's signature would transfer temporary control to a three-heir council. Evelyn claimed Celeste had already signed.

Valerie looked at the rooftop through the glass wall.

No sign of her sister.

"You forged it."

"Celeste understands survival."

The acting director of the foundation, Miriam Crane, spoke. Valerie had trusted her for five years.

"Sign, Valerie. The institution is larger than any one family."

"That sentence built Meridian."

Miriam did not flinch. "Meridian prevented wars of succession, protected companies, and preserved philanthropic networks through unstable generations."

"It stole children."

"It created continuity."

Evelyn touched the biometric pad. "You may hate the method and still benefit from the result. You are here because someone protected your place."

"No. I am here because people confused control with love."

Valerie sat.

She signed.

A soft chime sounded.

Evelyn's smile widened.

Then every screen in the boardroom changed.

The hidden cameras from the Hale house played first: Rose forced to cook while ill, Eleanor striking her, Noah locked in the pantry, Mark taking money from a Meridian courier.

Next came the Nursery Zero footage: Eleanor holding Noah at gunpoint, the masked Director, the board payment records.

Then the mountain archive: Conrad's confession, the portraits, the third protocol.

Miriam stood. "Turn that off."

Valerie had not transferred control.

She had authorized public disclosure.

Ashford Tower's internal network sent the files to regulators, news agencies, international courts, and every company employee at once.

"You used the signature key," Evelyn said.

"I finally learned what I own."

The boardroom doors locked.

Ortiz's voice came through the speakers.

"Federal agents. No one move."

Chaos erupted.

Two board members ran toward a side exit. One drew a weapon. Bell struck him with a cane before he could fire.

Valerie looked at Bell.

"I told you not to trust me," he said. "I hoped you would understand that included the letter."

The midnight meeting had been a trap for Meridian's leadership. Bell had appeared to betray Valerie to bring Evelyn and the board together.

"Rose and Noah?" Valerie asked.

"Floor eighty-one."

There was no listed floor eighty-one.

Mark's information was correct. A hidden staircase rose above the boardroom.

Valerie ran.

Evelyn followed.

At the top, they entered a circular room surrounded by city lights. Rose sat tied to a chair. Noah lay sleeping on a couch, unharmed.

Celeste stood beside him with a gun.

Valerie stopped.

Evelyn entered behind her.

For one instant, the three women faced one another.

Primary.

Reserve.

Correction.

Celeste raised the gun.

Evelyn smiled. "I told you she chose survival."

Celeste fired.

The bullet passed Valerie and struck the control panel beside Evelyn.

Steel shutters dropped over the windows. The room's doors sealed.

"I chose my sister," Celeste said.

Evelyn lunged.

The fight was fast and brutal. Celeste and Evelyn moved with the same trained precision. Valerie had no such training, but she had fury. She drove into Evelyn as Rose shouted. The three crashed against the glass partition around the stairwell.

Evelyn pulled a blade.

Bell appeared at the doorway below.

He saw the knife.

He moved between them.

The blade entered his chest.

Celeste caught Evelyn's wrist. Valerie struck her once, twice, until the knife fell.

Agents stormed the room.

Evelyn did not resist as they restrained her.

She looked at Valerie over Bell's collapsing body.

"You think this ends because the board is exposed?"

Valerie knelt beside Bell.

Blood spread beneath his hand.

Evelyn smiled.

May you like

"Meridian was never the board."

Then the tower went dark.
