Chapter 11 - The Third Daughter

They left for the mountain estate before sunrise.
Federal agents objected, so Valerie used the one thing institutions respected more than caution: ownership. The road, surrounding forest, and ruins belonged to an Ashford land trust. She authorized the search and joined it as principal heir.
Rose remained at the mansion with Noah under protection.
Celeste came because no one could have stopped her.
Mark came because he recognized the third girl.
He was discharged into police custody, his leg immobilized, and transported in an armored van. At the base of the mountain, Ortiz questioned him again.
"I saw her at the private club," he said. "She called herself Eve."
"When?" Valerie asked.
"The night Conrad's representative offered me the marriage contract."
Celeste opened the van door. "You knew there were three of us?"
"I thought she was you."
"Did you sleep with her?" Valerie asked.
Mark looked away.
That answer hurt less than it should have. The marriage had become evidence.
The estate ruins appeared beyond pine trees. Blackened stone walls stood around a central chimney, but thermal imaging revealed heat beneath the ground.
Agents found an elevator under a collapsed greenhouse.
The lower level was immaculate.
White corridors. Fresh air. Working lights.
A brass plaque read MERIDIAN CONTINUITY CAMPUS 1.
They entered a gallery filled with portraits of Ashford heirs. Beside each authentic heir hung a second portrait labeled Reserve. Some had third portraits labeled Correction.
At the end were three portraits.
Valerie: Primary.
Celeste: Reserve.
Evelyn: Correction.
Evelyn.
The name unsettled Valerie because Rose had once said she planned to name a second daughter Evelyn if she ever had one.
They found a classroom with recent coffee cups, a dining room set for twelve, and a medical suite stocked within the month.
No people.
In the control room, Celeste activated the archive.
A recording began.
Conrad appeared older and thinner than Valerie remembered.
"If you are seeing this," he said, "then the third protocol has begun."
He explained that the twin transfer was not the full truth. Rose gave birth to two girls. Meridian created the third through embryo replication and surrogacy, using genetic material collected without consent. Evelyn was not an identical triplet in the natural sense, but she was genetically almost indistinguishable.
"A replacement designed from the beginning," Celeste whispered.
Conrad admitted he funded the experiment before understanding what Meridian intended. Evelyn was raised not to imitate Valerie, but to surpass her. She received financial training, combat instruction, social conditioning, and one central belief: the Ashford inheritance had been stolen from her.
"She is Director Gray," Valerie said.
The screen went black.
A live feed replaced it.
Rose sat in the mansion's family room holding Noah.
Behind her stood a woman.
Valerie's face. Celeste's scar. Longer hair.
Evelyn.
She leaned toward the camera.
"Welcome home, sisters."
Valerie reached for her phone. No signal.
On-screen, Rose sensed movement and turned.
Evelyn touched one finger to her lips.
Then she looked directly into the camera.
"You opened every door for me," she said. "Now I will close one."
The feed cut.
Ortiz ordered the team back to the vehicles.
Mark shouted from the corridor.
They found him beside a hidden cabinet, holding a bundle of documents.
"These are payments," he said. "To judges, hospital staff, police."
One name appeared repeatedly.
Samuel Bell.
Valerie read the final entry.
Payment authorized three days earlier.
Purpose: deliver Primary and Reserve to Campus 1.
She turned toward the elevator.
May you like
Bell was not with them.
He had remained at the mansion with Rose.
