Chapter 19 - THE HOUSE WITH NO LOCKED DOORSTwo years after Daniel's failed wedding, Margaret bought a modest house overlooking the Maine coast.

Not a mansion.

Richard would have hated it.

That was part of its charm.

Lily became director of the employee trust at Hawthorne Mercer Group.

She refused the ceremonial office reserved for the founder's family.

Nathan built an independent forensic accounting firm specializing in corporate fraud.

His first framed photograph showed him with Daniel.

No Richard.

Claire remained a music teacher three days a week despite possessing more money than she could reasonably spend.

When Daniel asked why, she looked genuinely confused.

"Because I like teaching music."

It was perhaps the healthiest answer anyone connected to the company had ever given.

Vanessa eventually pleaded guilty to lesser financial offenses connected to the attempted transfer.

She received probation, community service and restitution requirements after extensive cooperation.

She never returned to the world she once desperately wanted.

Years later, Emma received a Christmas card.

Vanessa was standing beside her father outside a small house.

No diamonds.

No designer dress.

She looked happy.

Emma showed the card to Daniel.

He looked at it for several seconds.

"Good," he said.

And meant it.

Daniel never became CEO.

He served on the new board for one term, then left.

People thought he was insane.

He had spent his youth being trained to inherit an empire.

He discovered that he preferred building smaller things.

He launched a fund for family-owned businesses facing succession disputes and coercive control.

Emma called it therapy disguised as finance.

Daniel did not disagree.

Their relationship grew slowly.

That mattered.

No expensive proposals.

No newspaper announcements.

No giant parties.

One evening they were washing dishes at Margaret's house when Daniel asked:

"Would marrying me ruin weddings for you permanently?"

Emma nearly dropped a plate.

"Is that your proposal?"

"I had something prepared."

"Where?"

"In my coat."

"And instead you're doing this over dirty dishes?"

"I panicked."

Emma started laughing.

Daniel did too.

Then he became serious.

"I don't want a perfect wedding."

"Thank God."

"I don't want four hundred guests."

"Better."

"I don't even particularly want white roses."

"Absolutely forbidden."

Daniel reached into his pocket.

He had apparently moved the ring from his coat hours earlier.

Emma stared at him.

"You liar."

"I adapted."

He held it out.

"Emma Reed, the worst day of my life started because you opened a door and told me the truth."

Her eyes filled.

"I'd like the best parts of my life to start with you too."

Emma was crying before he finished.

"Yes."

From the living room Lily shouted:

"FINALLY."

Daniel stared toward the doorway.

Lily, Margaret, Nathan and Claire were standing there.

Emma covered her face.

"You told them?"

Daniel looked offended.

"I told nobody."

Margaret pointed at Lily.

"She saw the ring."

Lily shrugged.

"I inherited surveillance instincts."

Everyone stared at her.

"Too soon?"

Nathan nodded.

"Definitely."

They laughed anyway.

May you like

There were no secrets behind closed doors anymore.

Not the dangerous kind.
