Chapter 17 - RICHARD ASKED HIS CHILDREN TO SAVE HIMNine months after the ruined wedding, Richard Whitmore accepted a plea agreement.

Multiple fraud counts.
Witness coercion.
Falsification of records.
Conspiracy.
His cooperation against Vale reduced what could have been a much longer sentence.
It did not save him.
Before sentencing, Richard requested one thing.
His family in the courtroom.
Margaret did not want to go.
Lily did.
Daniel understood why.
Sometimes closure was not forgiveness.
Sometimes it was seeing that the person who frightened you could no longer control the room.
Richard entered wearing prison clothes.
Lily gripped Daniel's hand.
Their father's eyes moved toward them.
Margaret.
Daniel.
Lily.
Nathan.
Richard froze.
Nathan sat beside Daniel.
Publicly.
No more secret son.
No more backup plan.
Richard looked betrayed.
Nathan almost laughed.
At sentencing, Richard spoke.
He apologized to shareholders.
To employees.
To "those affected."
He did not say Margaret's name.
He did not say Vanessa's.
He did not say Claire's.
Daniel knew immediately.
His father was still negotiating with his own conscience.
Then Richard looked toward his children.
"I made mistakes."
Lily whispered, "There it is."
Daniel glanced at her.
"The smallest possible word," she said.
The judge imposed the sentence.
Richard would spend years in federal prison.
Restitution would consume most of the personal assets he had hidden.
Several civil cases would continue.
When proceedings ended, Richard asked to speak to Daniel.
Daniel approached only as far as the barrier.
"You won," Richard said.
"No."
Richard frowned.
"You have the company."
"I don't."
"What?"
"We gave most of the control away."
Richard stared at him.
"You did what?"
For the first time all day, genuine emotion broke through.
"You gave away the company?"
Daniel almost smiled.
That was the punishment his father understood.
Not prison.
Not disgrace.
The thing he had destroyed his family to possess no longer belonged to any one family.
Richard looked toward Margaret.
"You let him do this?"
Margaret approached.
"No."
She looked at Daniel with pride.
"We did it together."
Richard shook his head.
"Everything I built—"
Margaret interrupted.
"You mean everything you took."
The guard stepped forward.
Richard's time was over.
As he was led away, he turned back.
"Daniel!"
Daniel did not move.
"You'll regret throwing away your inheritance!"
Daniel answered calmly.
"You were my inheritance."
Richard stopped.
Daniel finished:
"Getting rid of what you taught me was the hard part."
The guard led Richard through the door.
It closed.
Lily exhaled.
Margaret took both her children's hands.
Nathan stood uncertainly nearby.
Margaret looked at him.
Then extended her hand too.
Nathan stared.
"I'm not your son."
"No."
She nodded.
"But none of this was your fault either."
Slowly, Nathan took her hand.
They left the courthouse together.
May you like
Richard remained behind.
For the first time, the family walked away before he could.
