Chapter 10 - LILY'S NAME WAS ON THE DEBTThe bankruptcy filing contained a poison pill.

Three years earlier, Whitmore Holdings had guaranteed nearly six hundred million dollars in private loans.

The guarantees appeared to carry board approval.

They did not.

Several signatures were forged.

One belonged to Margaret.

Another belonged to Daniel.

And twenty-three pages carried Lily Whitmore's name.

Lily stared at them.

"I was twenty-one."

Martin looked sick.

According to the documents, Lily had personally guaranteed one portion of the debt through a family trust.

If upheld, she could lose almost everything Richard had ever placed in her name.

She laughed once.

A frightened sound.

"He threatened to cut me off for years."

Margaret reached for her.

Lily stepped back.

"And the whole time he was using me as collateral."

Daniel wanted to break something.

Instead, he called the lender.

That was what six months away had taught him.

Rage felt powerful.

Documents were more useful.

The lender was a private investment fund called Northstar Capital.

Its managing director agreed to meet.

When Daniel entered the conference room, Thomas Vale was already there.

The trap became obvious.

Northstar had not accidentally financed Richard.

It had worked with him.

Vale offered terms.

Drop the Hawthorne claim.

Margaret resigns.

Claire accepts twenty million dollars.

Daniel signs a release.

In exchange, Northstar restructures the debt and releases Lily.

Daniel stared at Vale.

"You put my sister's name on forged guarantees and now you're offering to save her from them?"

Vale shrugged.

"Business often looks ugly when described emotionally."

Lily stood.

She had insisted on attending.

For most of her life, Richard had controlled her using one threat.

Obey or lose everything.

Vale had made the same mistake.

"You know what my father never understood?" she asked.

Vale smiled.

"I'm sure you're going to tell me."

"I don't want his money anymore."

She picked up the proposed settlement.

Then tore it in half.

Vale's smile vanished.

"If you invalidate the trust, you lose tens of millions."

"Then I lose it."

"Lily—"

"No."

She looked at Daniel.

Then Margaret.

"For the first time in my life, nobody gets to buy my silence."

Margaret's eyes filled.

Vale gathered his papers.

"Very inspiring."

He looked at Daniel.

"Your employees won't find it inspiring when their paychecks stop."

Then he left.

That evening Daniel walked alone through the headquarters.

Forty thousand employees.

Families.

Mortgages.

Pensions.

Vale was right about one thing.

Truth had consequences for innocent people too.

Daniel entered his father's old office.

The room had remained empty since Richard's arrest.

He opened the desk.

Nothing.

Then he noticed scratches underneath one drawer.

He pulled harder.

A false bottom came loose.

Inside was a sealed envelope.

Written across the front:

DANIEL - IF THEY FIND HAWTHORNE

His father's handwriting.

Daniel opened it.

There was no letter.

Only a photograph.

Daniel at age eleven.

Richard standing behind him.

And another boy beside them.

Older than Daniel.

On the back Richard had written:

My first son.

Daniel stared at the words.

May you like

Then at the boy's face.

He had never seen him before.
