Chapter 12 - THE ORIGINAL SIN CAME BEFORE RICHARDArthur Mercer had hired Thomas Vale thirty-five years earlier.

That part was true.

What nobody knew was why.

Vale had helped Mercer conceal dangerous construction defects at one of the company's earliest properties.

Eleanor Hawthorne discovered the falsified reports.

She threatened to expose them.

Two weeks later she died.

Daniel stared at Nathan.

"Are you saying my grandfather killed her?"

"No."

"Then what are you saying?"

"I'm saying someone benefited from her silence."

Nathan's evidence was incomplete.

Payments.

Internal memos.

Deleted inspection records recovered from ancient backups.

Nothing proving murder.

Enough to prove the family's mythology was false.

Arthur Mercer had not been the flawless founder Margaret remembered.

He had made compromises.

He had protected the company.

Perhaps at terrible cost.

Daniel took the evidence to his mother.

Margaret read everything.

Then she locked herself in her office for an hour.

When she emerged, she carried Arthur's letter from the old hotel.

"I spent twelve years wanting my name back," she said.

Daniel waited.

"Now I'm discovering the name itself may never have been clean."

Claire sat opposite her.

For decades, Claire had believed Richard stole her inheritance.

Now she had to confront the possibility that the betrayal began with Margaret's father.

Margaret looked at her.

"I will understand if you want everything."

Claire's eyes narrowed.

"Everything?"

"The company."

"Margaret—"

"Your mother created half of what became this empire. My husband stole from you. My father may have betrayed her before that."

Claire looked around the boardroom.

Then she said something nobody expected.

"I don't want your company."

Daniel frowned.

"You legally control it."

"I want the truth."

She pointed toward the windows overlooking forty floors of offices.

"If taking this building means becoming another person who spends her life protecting it, then Richard wins anyway."

Daniel understood.

The company had become the weapon.

Everyone thought controlling it was victory.

Maybe that was the trap.

Nathan joined them later.

He proposed a plan.

Allow the bankruptcy hearing to proceed.

Force Vale and Northstar to present their entire claim.

Then challenge the debt using Lily's forged guarantees and Hawthorne's original ownership agreement.

It would expose everything publicly.

Including Arthur Mercer's role.

Margaret did not hesitate.

"Do it."

Daniel looked at his mother.

"Mom, this could destroy Granddad's reputation."

Margaret folded the letter.

"Then perhaps his reputation should depend on what he did."

Daniel smiled faintly.

It was the sentence Richard could never have spoken.

Three days before the hearing, Vanessa called Emma.

She was crying.

"Someone was inside my apartment."

"Are you safe?"

"Yes."

"What did they take?"

Vanessa's answer chilled her.

"Nothing."

Emma remembered the archive room.

Nothing stolen.

A message.

May you like

Then Vanessa whispered:

"They left my old wedding veil on the bed."
