Chapter 8 - The Boardroom Confession

The lake house had been closed since Adrian’s disappearance.

Vivian owned the property, but she had not visited in years. Adrian used it when he wanted to escape board meetings, family expectations, and the carefully managed image of being a Vale.

Elena had spent one weekend there with him.

It was where he gave her the silver ring.

It was where they chose the private phrase that would prove a message truly came from him.

Blue stars stay visible.

Detective Blake obtained a warrant before anyone entered.

The house looked untouched.

A mug remained beside the kitchen sink. Books stood open on a desk. Adrian’s old jacket hung near the door.

Elena wanted to touch everything and nothing.

Police searched for six hours.

They found no blue ledger.

Near sunset, Elena walked to the dock. Ice covered the edge of the lake, turning the water silver beneath the fading light.

She remembered Adrian pointing toward the sky.

You cannot always see the stars, he had told her, but that does not mean they are gone.

Blue stars stay visible.

Elena looked toward the blue-painted wooden star mounted above the boathouse door.

She called Detective Blake.

Behind the star was a narrow metal box.

Inside lay a blue leather ledger, three sealed envelopes, and a small voice recorder.

One envelope was addressed to Vivian.

Another to Elena.

The third carried no name.

Detective Blake documented everything before opening the box.

The ledger contained years of private payments from Vale Meridian accounts to shell companies. Some payments corresponded with dates connected to government contracts. Others appeared days before the deaths of executives, auditors, and Charles Vale.

Damian’s name appeared repeatedly.

So did another set of initials.

C.V.

“Charles Vale?” Naomi suggested.

Vivian shook her head.

“My husband’s middle name was Edward.”

The voice recorder contained Adrian’s argument with the unidentified woman.

Adrian’s voice came first.

“I found the altered maintenance report.”

The woman replied.

“You found a copy with no authentication.”

“I found Damian’s payment to the inspector.”

“Lower your voice.”

“Father died because someone wanted his board vote.”

“You do not know that.”

“You knew enough to hide the report.”

“If the investigation reopened, every contract signed after his death would be challenged.”

“So you protected the company.”

“I protected thousands of employees.”

“You protected yourself.”

The woman’s voice trembled.

“Everything I did was for this family.”

Adrian answered.

“Then this family is finished.”

The recording ended.

Vivian listened with tears on her face.

“That is not my voice.”

Elena believed her.

“Who else did Adrian call Mother?”

Vivian stared at the frozen lake.

“My sister.”

Vivian explained that her older sister, Claudia, had raised Adrian during long periods when Vivian and Charles traveled for the company. Adrian called both women Mother when he was young.

Claudia Vale had withdrawn from public life after Charles’s death.

She still controlled a large portion of the family trust.

More importantly, she was Damian’s mother.

The board meeting took place three days later.

Damian had requested an emergency vote to freeze Adrian’s shares before the DNA result could be formally entered into the trust records. He claimed newly discovered financial misconduct required investigation.

He expected Elena to remain outside.

Vivian brought her into the boardroom.

Damian stood near the long glass table, surrounded by attorneys and directors. His confidence slipped when he saw the blue ledger in Detective Blake’s evidence case.

“This is a private corporate meeting,” Damian said.

Vivian took her seat.

“It concerns my granddaughter’s property.”

Damian looked at Elena.

“You have no idea what you are carrying into this room.”

“I know exactly what I’m carrying,” Elena replied. “Evidence you tried to steal my daughter.”

Damian turned toward the directors.

“This woman has manipulated a grieving family.”

Jonathan Price distributed copies of the DNA report, the trust documents, and the recorded payments to Martin and Celeste.

Naomi played the black sedan video.

Damian did not react until his own voice filled the room.

Once Elena is declared unfit.

Several directors looked away from him.

He recovered quickly.

“Those recordings were obtained illegally.”

Detective Blake spoke from the doorway.

“That will be determined by a court. The payments and forged filings have been independently verified.”

Vivian called for a vote to suspend Damian from all corporate and trust positions pending investigation.

Before the vote could begin, the boardroom doors opened.

Claudia Vale entered.

She was nearly seventy, elegant and composed. Damian’s face showed relief.

“Mother.”

Claudia ignored him.

She walked toward Vivian.

“You should not have brought outsiders into this.”

Elena understood the voice before Claudia finished the sentence.

Adrian had called her Mother on the recording.

Vivian stood.

“Did you hide the maintenance report after Charles died?”

Claudia looked toward the directors.

“This is not the place.”

“It is exactly the place.”

Damian moved closer to her.

“Do not answer.”

Claudia’s eyes flashed.

“You have given enough instructions.”

She turned toward Elena.

“Your parents were not supposed to leave you in that apartment.”

Elena felt the room sharpen around her.

“You knew about the plan?”

“I authorized financial support. Damian changed the conditions.”

“Financial support for what?”

“To persuade you to raise the baby privately.”

“Without telling Vivian?”

Claudia looked at Grace’s photograph on the table.

“Adrian’s child would have divided the family when the company was already vulnerable.”

“She is a baby, not a board vote.”

“In this family, she is both.”

Damian interrupted.

“You are confused.”

Claudia slapped her hand against the table.

“Stop speaking for me.”

The room fell silent.

Claudia looked at Vivian.

“I hid the maintenance report.”

Vivian gripped the chair.

“Why?”

“Because Charles discovered Damian was moving money through government contractors. They argued before the flight. Damian threatened to remove him from the board.”

Damian’s face became pale.

“You said the crash was an accident.”

“I said I could not prove otherwise.”

“You destroyed the report.”

“I hid it.”

“Where?”

Claudia looked toward the blue ledger.

“Adrian found it.”

Detective Blake stepped forward.

“Mrs. Vale, did Damian tamper with the helicopter?”

Claudia hesitated.

Damian moved toward the exit.

Two officers blocked the door.

Claudia finally answered.

“I saw him give the inspector an envelope.”

The board voted unanimously to suspend Damian.

Police arrested him for fraud, witness intimidation, conspiracy, and obstruction connected to Elena’s case. The investigation into both Vale deaths was reopened.

As officers led him away, Damian stopped beside Elena.

“You think you won because you found a ledger?”

Elena held his gaze.

“You will never control my daughter.”

May you like

Damian smiled faintly.

“I was never the one Adrian feared most.”
