Chapter 10 - The Man in the Winter Camera

The winter house did not appear in the Vale family’s public property records.

It stood beyond a mountain town two hundred miles north of the city, hidden behind forest and protected by a private road.

According to Vivian, Charles purchased it under a holding company before Adrian was born. The family used it until his death. After the helicopter crash, Claudia ordered the house closed.

No one had supposedly entered it for eight years.

Elena wanted police to search it immediately.

Detective Blake agreed, but obtaining legal access took time because the holding company was controlled through several trusts. Damian’s attorneys challenged the warrant, claiming the house had no connection to Adrian’s disappearance.

Vivian could have granted access voluntarily.

She refused.

“What are you hiding?” Elena asked.

They stood in the townhouse kitchen while Grace slept upstairs.

Vivian looked older than she had three months earlier.

“I am trying to determine what Adrian meant.”

“You knew about the house before the recording.”

“Yes.”

“You were afraid when he mentioned it.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Vivian sat at the table.

“When Adrian was ten, he disappeared during a winter storm. We found him at that house with Claudia.”

“What was Claudia doing there?”

“She said Adrian ran away and she followed him.”

“You didn’t believe her.”

“I wanted to.”

Elena waited.

Vivian continued.

“Afterward, Adrian began having nightmares. He said there was a locked room beneath the house. Charles insisted no such room existed.”

“Did you check?”

“No.”

“Why not?”

“Because Charles made me choose between trusting my husband and frightening my son with more questions.”

“You chose Charles.”

“Yes.”

The answer carried no defense.

Elena looked toward the ceiling where Grace slept.

“You keep telling me powerful families protect themselves. This is what that protection costs.”

“I know.”

“Then authorize the search.”

Vivian signed the access order that afternoon.

Detective Blake led the search two days later. Elena remained home with Grace while Naomi traveled with investigators.

Snow began falling shortly after sunset.

At nine in the evening, Naomi called.

“We found the lower room.”

“What is inside?”

“Files. Medical equipment. Old computers. The team is documenting everything.”

“Anything connected to Adrian?”

“A bed with restraints.”

Elena closed her eyes.

“Was Adrian held there?”

“We don’t know.”

Naomi lowered her voice.

“There are video archives.”

“What kind of videos?”

“Family members. Employees. Politicians. People signing agreements or making confessions. It looks like the house was used to collect leverage.”

“By Damian?”

“The oldest recordings were made when Damian was a teenager.”

“Then Charles?”

“Possibly.”

Elena thought of Adrian’s words.

The trust was never the real target.

“What else?”

Naomi hesitated.

“One camera is still active.”

“After eight years?”

“It was recently replaced.”

A cold sensation moved across Elena’s skin.

“How recently?”

“Two weeks ago.”

Elena stood.

“Someone has been using the house.”

“Blake is searching the grounds now.”

The call suddenly cut out.

Elena tried to call back.

No signal.

The townhouse lights flickered.

Then went dark.

The backup security system activated, casting a dim blue glow through the hallway.

Grace began crying upstairs.

Elena ran to the nursery and lifted her from the crib.

“It’s all right,” she whispered. “I have you.”

Her phone connected to the security application.

The front camera showed an empty street covered in rain.

The back camera showed the small garden.

The side camera displayed a narrow passage beside the house.

A man stood beneath the eaves.

His face was hidden by the hood of a dark coat.

Elena locked the nursery door and called emergency services.

The man did not approach the entrance.

He lifted one hand toward the camera.

A silver chain hung from his fingers.

Elena looked at the dresser.

Adrian’s chain was gone.

She had placed it there that morning.

The security application opened an audio channel without her touching the screen.

Static filled the nursery.

Then the man spoke.

“Elena.”

Her knees nearly failed.

The voice sounded like Adrian.

Not exactly as she remembered it.

Older.

Rougher.

But close enough to make the room disappear around her.

“Who are you?” she demanded.

The man looked directly into the camera.

“Grace cannot remain with Vivian.”

“Show me your face.”

“Not while they are watching.”

“Who is watching?”

The camera image shook.

The man turned toward the street.

A black vehicle stopped beyond the park.

Its headlights went dark.

He faced the camera again.

“Ask Vivian what happened before the river.”

“What do you mean?”

“She knows why there was no body.”

Elena held Grace closer.

“Are you Adrian?”

The nursery window rattled in the wind.

The man reached toward his hood.

Before he could remove it, the security feed turned black.

Every camera disconnected.

A sound came from downstairs.

The slow movement of the front door opening.

Elena backed away from the nursery entrance.

Her phone vibrated.

A message appeared from Naomi.

Do not trust the man outside. We found Adrian.

Before Elena could open the attached photograph, someone knocked three times on the other side of the nursery door.

Then Adrian’s voice whispered from the hallway.

“Blue stars stay visible.”
