Chapter 3 - Adrian Vale’s Last Promise

The family court building was less grand than Elena expected.
There were no marble staircases or dramatic crowds, only pale walls, plastic chairs, and tired families waiting for decisions that would change their lives.
Martin and Celeste sat across the hallway with Sergio between them.
Sergio looked as though he had not slept. He avoided Elena’s eyes.
Their attorney, Thomas Rourke, wore a tailored navy suit and carried no visible paperwork. He smiled when Naomi approached, but the expression never reached his eyes.
“You’re moving quickly,” Naomi said.
“A newborn’s safety requires urgency.”
“So does preventing fraudulent guardianship.”
Rourke’s smile faded.
Before he could respond, the courtroom door opened.
The first hearing lasted only twenty-three minutes.
Naomi presented the livestream. Rourke argued that the recording had been taken out of context. Martin testified that Elena had become obsessed with the Vale family after Adrian’s death. Celeste claimed Elena refused psychological support.
Then the judge asked Elena where she intended to live.
“At the crisis residence until I secure permanent housing.”
“Are you employed?”
“I am on maternity leave from Bellmore Design.”
Rourke stood.
“Bellmore Design terminated Ms. Hart four weeks ago.”
Elena turned toward him.
“That isn’t true.”
Rourke handed Naomi a document.
The letter carried Bellmore’s logo and the signature of Elena’s supervisor.
Naomi studied it.
“Did you receive this?”
“No.”
The judge looked concerned.
Rourke continued.
“Ms. Hart has no income, no permanent home, and a documented pattern of false claims concerning a deceased man. Her parents are prepared to provide immediate stability.”
Elena looked at Sergio.
He stared at the floor.
Naomi requested time to verify the employment letter. The judge granted a seventy-two-hour protective arrangement. Grace would remain with Elena at the residence, but Leah would conduct daily visits. Elena’s parents were forbidden from removing the baby.
It was not victory.
But Grace remained in Elena’s arms.
Outside the courtroom, Martin approached.
“This does not have to become ugly.”
Elena laughed once.
“You left us in a condemned apartment.”
“We gave you a place to stay.”
“You gave yourselves photographs for a child welfare report.”
Martin’s face tightened.
“Lower your voice.”
“No.”
People in the hallway turned.
For most of Elena’s life, that would have silenced her. Martin’s anger controlled every room because everyone else agreed to protect it.
Elena was finished protecting him.
“You knew Adrian was Grace’s father.”
Martin leaned close.
“You have no idea what Adrian was.”
“Then tell me.”
“He was weak. He made promises without understanding the consequences.”
“What consequences?”
Celeste hurried over.
“Martin, stop.”
Elena turned to her mother.
“What did Damian offer you?”
Celeste became pale.
That was answer enough.
Rourke stepped between them.
“All future communication should go through counsel.”
Sergio remained near the wall.
As Elena walked away, he whispered her name.
She stopped.
Sergio glanced at Rourke and slipped something into the pocket of Elena’s coat.
“Don’t open it here.”
Naomi and Elena returned to the crisis residence.
Inside Elena’s pocket was a small brass key and a handwritten number.
317.
“Storage unit?” Naomi asked.
Elena recognized the key tag.
“Train station locker.”
They reached Central Station shortly before sunset. Locker 317 stood near the old eastern entrance.
Inside was a padded envelope addressed to Elena in Adrian’s handwriting.
Her knees nearly gave way.
The envelope held a memory card, a notarized letter, a medical document, and the silver chain Adrian always wore beneath his shirt.
Elena opened the letter.
Elena,
If you are reading this, Damian has either frightened me into leaving or made it impossible for me to reach you.
I need you to understand one thing before anything else.
I know the baby is mine.
I have never doubted you.
Tomorrow I will sign a formal acknowledgment of paternity and add our child to the Vale family trust. I should have done it sooner. I delayed because I thought I could protect you from my family’s conflicts. Instead, the delay gave Damian time to use you against me.
My mother does not know about the baby. She may appear cold, but she deserves the truth. Show her the medical document and the recording on this card.
Do not trust messages sent from my number unless they include the words we chose at the lake.
Blue stars stay visible.
I love you.
Adrian
Elena pressed the paper against her mouth.
None of the cruel messages sent after Adrian disappeared contained those words.
Naomi inserted the memory card into her laptop.
A video appeared.
Adrian sat in a private office. He looked tired but alive. A date in the corner showed the video had been recorded two days before the crash.
“If this recording is being played,” Adrian said, “it means I did not reach the trust meeting.”
He looked directly at the camera.
“My child with Elena Hart is my legal heir. Damian Vale knows about the pregnancy. He has threatened to use Elena’s family debts and her brother’s ambitions to force her away from me.”
Elena glanced at Naomi.
The video continued.
“I have authorized Dr. Malcolm Reed to retain the prenatal paternity analysis conducted with Elena’s consent. I have also prepared a signed acknowledgment. The originals are held by my personal attorney, Rebecca Shaw.”
Adrian paused.
“If something happens to me, investigate Damian.”
The video ended.
Naomi immediately searched for Rebecca Shaw.
The results showed that Rebecca had died five months earlier after falling from the balcony of a hotel in Lisbon. Police had ruled the death an accident.
Dr. Malcolm Reed had retired and closed his clinic.
“Two people who held evidence,” Naomi said. “One dead. One missing from practice.”
Elena examined the medical document from the locker.
It was a receipt from Dr. Reed’s clinic, not the test itself. A handwritten note at the bottom listed a file number.
Naomi photographed everything.
“We have enough to stop the guardianship petition. We may also have evidence of a larger conspiracy.”
Elena looked at Adrian’s chain.
“Why did Sergio have the key?”
“That is what we need to ask him.”
Sergio called before they could leave the station.
This time, he was crying.
“I didn’t know Adrian left a video,” he said.
“Where are you?”
“At home.”
“Is Damian there?”
“He left.”
“Why did you have the locker key?”
“Adrian gave it to me the week before he disappeared.”
Elena gripped the phone.
“Why didn’t you give it to me?”
“Dad found out.”
“What did he do?”
“He said Adrian was using you to destroy my future. Damian promised me a place in the leadership program if I kept quiet.”
“You traded my life for a job.”
“I thought Adrian was dead. I thought none of it mattered anymore.”
“Grace matters.”
“I know.”
A loud impact sounded through the phone.
Sergio inhaled sharply.
“Sergio?”
Someone took the phone from him.
Damian Vale spoke.
May you like
“You should have deleted the recording when you had the chance.”
The call ended.
