The DNA results arrived forty-eight hours later.

Probability of paternity: 99.99 percent.

Grace Hart was Adrian Vale’s daughter.

Vivian received the news in the same room as Elena, Naomi, Leah, and Jonathan Price. She read the report once, placed it on the table, and asked Elena a question no one expected.

“What does Grace need today?”

Not what does the trust require.

Not when can the family announce her.

Not how soon can the name be changed.

What does she need?

“Diapers,” Elena said. “A pediatric appointment. A permanent place to live. And a family that stops treating her like property.”

Vivian nodded.

“I can help with the first three. The fourth may take longer.”

The next guardianship hearing was scheduled for Monday.

Despite the DNA result and the dismissed emergency petition, Martin and Celeste filed an amended request. This time, they argued that Grace’s new status made Elena a target and that the child required the security of experienced guardians.

Their sudden concern would have been laughable if the threat were not so real.

Naomi filed evidence of the apartment, the false employment letter, the livestream, and the video recorded inside the black sedan.

Martin denied accepting payment.

Celeste claimed Damian had manipulated them.

Sergio submitted another statement supporting their petition.

Elena read it the night before the hearing.

“He could have called me.”

“He may believe he cannot.”

Elena looked at Adrian’s brass locker key on the table.

“What did my mother keep?”

They had searched the storage locker and the suitcase. They found nothing else.

Then Elena remembered the handbag Celeste carried from the maternity center.

It belonged to Elena.

Celeste had placed it on the apartment mattress before leaving. Inside were Elena’s wallet, charger, and discharge papers.

There was also a torn section in the lining.

Elena took the handbag from the closet and examined the seam.

Something hard rested beneath the fabric.

Naomi carefully opened the lining.

They delivered it to police rather than trying to open it themselves.

The drive contained contracts, audio recordings, trust amendments, and internal emails documenting Damian’s efforts to force Adrian from the Vale Meridian board.

Inside were financial records belonging to Martin and Celeste.

Damian had paid their mortgage arrears, Sergio’s private school debt, and several personal loans. In exchange, they provided updates on Elena’s pregnancy and prevented her from contacting Adrian.

Another recording captured Martin speaking to Damian three weeks before Adrian’s crash.

“If Elena learns Adrian intends to acknowledge the baby, she’ll never cooperate.”

Damian replied, “Then make certain she does not learn.”

There was also a draft guardianship agreement naming Martin and Celeste as temporary guardians before control would transfer to a trust administration company managed by Damian.

It was enough to destroy their petition.

It might also be enough to charge them.

The courtroom was crowded on Monday.

Reporters waited outside. Vale Meridian attorneys filled one side of the gallery. Vivian sat behind Elena, not with the company representatives.

Martin and Celeste entered with Rourke.

Sergio was not with them.

Naomi presented the evidence in a careful sequence.

The false child welfare report.

The apartment photographs.

The forged employment letter.

The archived livestream.

The DNA result.

The black sedan recording.

The payments.

Finally, the guardianship transfer draft.

Rourke tried to argue that Martin and Celeste had acted under pressure from Damian. The judge did not appear persuaded.

She denied their petition permanently.

She issued protective orders preventing them from approaching Elena or Grace without permission.

She referred the forged documents and financial records to prosecutors.

Then she addressed Elena.

“The court finds no evidence that you are unable to care for your child. The evidence instead shows a coordinated attempt to create conditions that could be used against you.”

Elena closed her eyes.

For the first time since Grace’s birth, she could breathe without wondering whether someone would take her daughter.

The decision was satisfying, but it did not feel joyful.

Her parents sat only a few feet away.

Martin looked furious.
