Chapter 5 - The Woman Behind the Black Car

Sergio was not a prisoner.
That was what he told Elena when police finally located him at a Vale Meridian property outside the city.
He claimed Damian had offered him protection from the growing scandal. He also claimed entering Adrian’s archive had been his own idea.
Elena did not believe either statement.
Sergio agreed to meet her at a police station, but he arrived with Rourke and refused to answer questions about the archive.
He looked thinner than he had two days earlier. A bruise darkened the skin near his wrist.
Elena noticed it.
Sergio pulled down his sleeve.
“What did Damian make you take?” she asked.
“Nothing.”
“Then why were you there?”
“I was looking for documents that could help you.”
“With Damian behind you?”
“He has access.”
“He is the reason Adrian hid the recording.”
Rourke interrupted.
“My client will not discuss unsupported accusations.”
Elena looked directly at Sergio.
“Grace was supposed to be placed with someone else. Was it Damian?”
Sergio’s eyes moved toward the one-way glass on the wall.
Then he said, “I don’t know.”
Elena understood.
He was not looking at his reflection.
He was wondering who might be watching.
When the meeting ended, Elena returned to the crisis residence with Naomi. A black sedan followed them for four blocks before turning away.
The same model appeared in the photograph from the maternity center.
That evening, Leah received authorization to move Elena and Grace to a confidential apartment. Only Naomi and two county officials knew the address.
At midnight, someone knocked.
Elena did not move.
The knock came again.
A woman spoke through the door.
“Elena Hart, my name is Vivian Vale.”
Elena looked through the peephole.
Vivian stood alone in the hallway.
She was in her early sixties, dressed in a black coat, her silver hair pulled away from her face. She looked neither angry nor warm. She looked like someone who had spent many years making decisions before other people understood there was a choice.
Elena opened the door but kept the chain secured.
“How did you find me?”
Vivian held up a small card.
“Jonathan Price told me.”
“He was not supposed to.”
“I am Adrian’s mother.”
“That does not give you the right to ignore my safety.”
“No. It does not.”
Vivian looked down at Grace.
Her composure broke for half a second.
“May I come in?”
Naomi arrived fifteen minutes later. Until then, Vivian remained standing near the door without asking to hold the baby.
When they were seated, Elena played Adrian’s recording.
Vivian watched without speaking.
At the end, she closed her eyes.
“My son recorded messages when he was afraid,” she said. “He learned that from his father.”
“You knew he was afraid of Damian?”
“I knew they were in conflict. Adrian wanted to restructure the trust so no single family member could control it. Damian believed that would weaken the company.”
“Did you know Adrian was leaving the board?”
“No.”
“Did you know about me?”
“No.”
The answer carried pain, but Elena was too angry to comfort her.
“Your family found out about me before you did.”
Vivian nodded.
“That appears to be true.”
“Someone used Adrian’s phone to tell me he denied Grace.”
Vivian looked at the messages.
“He would not have written these.”
“How can you be sure?”
“The language. Adrian never called a child an obligation.”
She looked toward the crib.
“And because he told me once that if he ever became a father, he would leave the company before allowing the board to control his family.”
Elena felt tears burn behind her eyes.
For months, she had tried not to grieve a man she believed had betrayed her. Now the grief returned without the protection of anger.
“Did Damian kill him?”
Vivian’s expression hardened.
“I do not know.”
“Do you suspect him?”
“I suspect Damian of many things. Murder requires evidence.”
Naomi placed the photograph of the black car on the table.
“Do you recognize it?”
Vivian studied the image.
“It belongs to one of our executive transport companies.”
“Who authorized its use?”
“I can find out.”
Elena shook her head.
“No private investigation. No quiet family solution.”
Vivian looked at her.
“You think I intend to protect Damian?”
“I think powerful families protect themselves.”
“You are correct.”
The honesty surprised Elena.
Vivian continued.
“That is why Adrian stopped trusting us.”
She placed a sealed envelope on the table.
“This contains an independent DNA testing order, a temporary financial support agreement with no guardianship conditions, and a written promise that I will not seek custody of Grace.”
Elena did not touch it.
“What do you want?”
“To know my granddaughter.”
“If the test confirms she is your granddaughter.”
Vivian looked at Grace again.
“She has Adrian’s eyes.”
“So does every baby when someone wants an heir.”
Vivian accepted the rebuke.
Naomi reviewed the documents. They were unusually straightforward. No confidentiality clause. No waiver of claims. No transfer of authority.
Elena signed only the DNA testing order.
Before leaving, Vivian stopped at the door.
“Sergio removed something from Adrian’s archive.”
“What?”
“A sealed packet Adrian placed there the day before the crash.”
“Do you know what was inside?”
“No.”
“Does Damian?”
“He knows enough to be afraid of it.”
After Vivian left, Elena received an anonymous message.
A video file appeared.
It showed Celeste and Martin sitting inside the black sedan outside the maternity center.
Damian sat opposite them.
The audio was clear.
Martin spoke first.
“You promised Sergio a permanent position.”
Damian nodded.
“Once Elena is declared unfit.”
Celeste looked down at her hands.
“And the baby?”
“My attorneys will arrange a private guardianship.”
“Under your name?” Celeste asked.
Damian smiled.
“No. Under Vivian’s.”
Elena replayed the sentence.
Damian had planned to take control of Grace while making it appear that Vivian was responsible.
At the end of the video, Martin accepted an envelope.
Celeste did not.
Instead, she leaned toward Damian.
“There is one problem.”
“What problem?”
“Adrian left something with Sergio.”
Damian’s smile vanished.
“What did he leave?”
The recording ended.
