Daddy Said Yes

Judge Hart returned to the courtroom shortly after three o’clock.

Bethany and Meadow stood together.

The judge began by addressing the adults.

“A child is not property. Her body is not a battlefield for family authority. Discipline does not require humiliation, and respect cannot be created through fear.”

Evelyn sat rigidly behind her attorney.

The judge granted Bethany sole physical custody and final authority over Meadow’s medical, educational, and emotional care.

Dustin would receive no unsupervised visitation for at least six months. Before supervised visits could begin, he was required to complete a parenting program, attend individual counseling, and demonstrate that he understood Meadow’s right to personal boundaries.

Evelyn was prohibited from contacting Meadow, appearing at her school, or attending visitation sessions. Any future request for contact would require a separate court review and a recommendation from Meadow’s therapist.

Then the judge addressed Dustin directly.

“You had a duty to protect your daughter, including from members of your own family. Instead, you gave permission and assisted.”

Dustin lowered his head.

Judge Hart turned toward Meadow.

“None of this was your fault.”

Meadow looked up.

“You were allowed to be proud of your medal. You were allowed to say no. The adults should have listened.”

Meadow’s grip on the evidence bag loosened.

The judge signed the order.

The sound of his pen against the paper was almost inaudible, yet Bethany felt as though the entire room had shifted.

Outside the courthouse, journalists called Bethany’s name. She ignored them and guided Meadow toward the steps.

Dustin came through the doors behind them but stopped several feet away.
