Chapter 4 - Their Version of Respect
Dustin reacted to the emergency filing with outrage.
He sent Bethany fourteen messages before sunrise.
You are destroying my relationship with my daughter.
My mother did nothing wrong.
You always wanted full custody.
You are teaching Meadow to hate her family.
Bethany did not respond.
By noon, Dustin had posted a vague message online about “parents who weaponize children after divorce.” Evelyn shared it and added that modern children had become weak because mothers refused to teach discipline.
Several relatives commented in support.
One wrote, A haircut is not abuse.
Another wrote, The girl probably needed to be humbled.
Bethany’s first instinct was to defend Meadow publicly. Renee advised against it.
“Let them speak,” the attorney said. “Every statement shows the court how they view what happened.”
Meanwhile, Meadow refused to attend school.
“What if everyone laughs?”
Bethany contacted the principal, Mrs. Alvarez, and explained the situation privately. Mrs. Alvarez arranged for Meadow to enter through the side office and meet with the school counselor before class.
The next morning, Meadow wore a knitted hat.
In the counselor’s office, she sat silently for several minutes. Then she removed the hat.
The counselor did not gasp or stare.
She simply said, “I’m glad you came today.”
Meadow began to cry.
Later, two of her closest friends asked whether she wanted to sit between them at lunch. Neither mentioned her hair until Meadow brought it up herself.
“My grandmother cut it because I wouldn’t give her my medal.”
One friend frowned.
“But you won that.”
“I know.”
“You didn’t do anything wrong.”
Those five words stayed with Meadow.
That evening, she repeated them to Bethany.
“I didn’t do anything wrong.”
Bethany knelt in front of her.
“No, sweetheart. You didn’t.”
The emergency order arrived an hour later.

Dustin’s visitation was temporarily suspended until the court hearing. Evelyn was forbidden from contacting Meadow directly.
For the first time, someone outside Bethany’s apartment had officially said that what happened mattered.
