Chapter 3 - The Bag of Golden Hair

Bethany carried Meadow out of the house wrapped in her coat.

Before leaving, she returned to the bathroom and collected the cut hair from the floor. Her hands shook as she placed the strands into a clean plastic bag she found beneath the sink.

Evelyn laughed coldly.

“You’re collecting evidence now?”

“Yes,” Bethany answered.

The laughter stopped.

At home, Bethany did not ask Meadow to explain everything immediately. She made warm cocoa, found her softest pajamas, and sat beside her on the couch.

Meadow kept touching the uneven ends of her hair.

“Do I look bad?”

Bethany’s chest tightened.

“You look like Meadow.”

“That isn’t what I asked.”

Bethany turned toward her.

“What happened to you was wrong. But nothing they did could make you less beautiful, less smart, or less important.”

Meadow stared into her cup.

“Grandma said I cared too much about how I looked.”

“You were proud of something you earned.”

“She said I was vain because I wanted my medal back.”

“Wanting your own property returned is not vanity.”

Meadow’s eyes filled again.

“Daddy held my hands.”

Bethany froze.

“He held them while Grandma cut my hair?”

Meadow nodded.

“He said I was making it worse by moving.”

Bethany pulled her daughter close, careful not to react in a way that frightened her further.

That night, after Meadow fell asleep beside her, Bethany photographed the uneven haircut, the ribbon, the medal Evelyn had finally thrown onto the floor, and the bag containing Meadow’s hair.

Then she called her attorney, Renee Lawson.

Renee listened without interrupting.

“Do not contact Evelyn again tonight,” she said. “Save every message from Dustin. Write down exactly what Meadow told you, using her words. Tomorrow morning, we file for an emergency custody hearing.”

Bethany looked toward her sleeping daughter.

“What if the court says it’s only a haircut?”

“It isn’t only a haircut,” Renee replied. “It is a parent giving another adult permission to overpower and humiliate a child.”

For the first time since entering Evelyn’s house, Bethany felt something stronger than panic.

She felt direction.
