Chapter 7 - The Father on the Stand
At the final hearing, Dustin entered the courtroom believing he could explain everything.
He described himself as a tired father caught between a difficult former wife and a strong-willed mother. He said he had made a poor decision during a stressful afternoon.
Renee stood for cross-examination.
“Did Meadow ask you to stop your mother?”
“Yes.”
“How many times?”
“I don’t remember.”
“Did she cry?”
“Yes.”
“Did you physically prevent her from leaving?”
“I held her still so she wouldn’t be hurt by the scissors.”
“Who created the danger involving the scissors?”
Dustin shifted in his chair.
“My mother was already cutting.”
“You could have stopped her.”
“It happened quickly.”
Renee placed a printed message on the courtroom display.
It was a text Evelyn had sent Dustin before the lunch.
She needs a lesson. I am thinking of cutting that ridiculous hair she is so proud of.
Dustin had replied:
Do what you think is necessary. She needs to respect you.
The courtroom became silent.
Renee faced him.
“You approved it before your daughter arrived, didn’t you?”
Dustin looked toward his attorney.
The judge ordered him to answer.
“Yes.”
Bethany closed her eyes.
Even though she already knew, hearing him admit it felt like a door closing permanently.
Renee continued.
“Afterward, did you seek medical or emotional support for Meadow?”
“No.”
“Did you apologize?”
“I tried, but Bethany blocked me.”
“You sent fourteen messages. Please identify the apology.”
Dustin stared at the messages on the screen.
There was no apology.
There were accusations, excuses, and demands.
Renee stepped back.
“No further questions.”
Judge Hart looked at Dustin for a long moment.

“You appear to believe your greatest mistake was being caught,” he said. “This court must decide whether you understand that your real failure was choosing an adult’s pride over your child’s trust.”
Dustin had no answer.
