Chapter 8 - Evelyn Loses Control

Evelyn demanded to testify.
Her attorney advised against it, but she insisted that the court needed to hear from “someone who understood proper parenting.”
She entered the witness box wearing a dark green suit and a pearl necklace. She looked directly at the spectators, as if expecting their approval.
“My granddaughter had become obsessed with praise,” she said. “She refused to surrender a medal when corrected. I gave her a lesson she would remember.”
Judge Hart interrupted.
“Was the purpose of the haircut to embarrass her?”
“The purpose was humility.”
“Did she consent?”
“Children do not consent to discipline.”
“Did she ask you to stop?”
“She was emotional.”
“That was not my question.”
Evelyn’s mouth tightened.
“Yes.”
“Did you stop?”
“No.”
The judge glanced at the evidence bag.
“Why did you keep cutting?”
“Because surrendering to tears teaches manipulation.”
A woman in the spectators’ benches quietly gasped.
For the first time, Evelyn appeared uncertain.
Judge Hart asked, “Do you regret what you did?”
“I regret that Bethany turned it into a public spectacle.”
Bethany felt Meadow’s hand slide into hers.
Evelyn continued speaking, but each sentence made her position worse. She accused Bethany of weakness, Meadow of vanity, Caroline of betrayal, and the school of encouraging disobedience.
She blamed everyone except herself.
When she stepped down, even Dustin would not look at her.
In the hallway, Evelyn approached him.
“You will fix this,” she whispered.
Dustin stared through the courtroom doors toward Meadow.
“No,” he said.
Evelyn looked stunned.
“You told me I could do it.”
“I know.”
“You agreed she needed punishment.”
“I know.”
“Then defend me.”
Dustin shook his head.
“I already chose you once.”
The court officer directed Evelyn away from the doors.

For the first time in Dustin’s life, his mother issued a command he did not obey.
But it had come too late to erase what Meadow remembered.
