Chapter 8 - code black
Arthur did not wait for another court order.
He called the sheriff’s office, Daniel contacted the judge and Mara activated Meridian’s emergency tracking network.
Lily’s bracelet signal moved north along the river road.
Richard’s vehicle appeared on two traffic cameras before turning toward the old industrial district.
Eleanor’s phone remained switched off.
Daniel received confirmation from the judge.
“No one authorized the transport change. The signature was forged.”
Arthur picked up the black satellite phone.
Mara watched him.
“Code Black authorizes full family extraction. Once activated, every Meridian resource in the region becomes operational.”
“My daughter was removed using a false court order.”
“I know.”
“It also alerts the person who stole my credentials.”
Mara nodded.
“That person will know we discovered the breach.”
Arthur pressed the side switch.
“Code Black. Family asset compromised. Preserve all evidence and begin extraction.”
Meridian responded instantly.
Traffic cameras were secured before they could be erased. Court records were copied. Every employee who had accessed the custody file received a legal preservation notice.
A helicopter followed the river at a distance.
Arthur’s vehicle reached an abandoned research complex once owned by the Vale Trust.
Lily’s signal had stopped inside Building 4.
Richard’s car stood near the entrance.
The doors were open.
Arthur entered with Mara and two unarmed child protection officers authorized by the judge. Meridian agents remained outside unless immediate danger appeared.
The building smelled of dust and rain.
A child’s voice echoed from the far corridor.
“Dad?”
Arthur ran toward it.
He found Lily in a small office with Eleanor.
The old woman was trying to unlock a second door with trembling hands.
Lily rushed into Arthur’s arms.
He held her tightly.
“Are you hurt?”
“No.”
“Where is Richard?”
Eleanor pointed toward the second door.
“He took the recorder.”
Arthur looked at her.
“Why did you remove Lily from the courthouse?”
“I didn’t.”
“You were driving.”
“Richard gave me an injection at the mansion. I woke in the car. He forced me to sit behind the wheel when they reached the courthouse cameras.”
Mara checked Eleanor’s pupils.
“She needs medical attention.”
Eleanor gripped Arthur’s arm.
“Do not let them declare me confused again.”
“I won’t.”
A sound came from behind the locked door.
Arthur used Lily’s brass key.
It fit.
The corridor beyond led to a laboratory filled with old servers. Richard stood beside a metal desk, transferring files from the nursery recorder to a portable drive.
He turned when Arthur entered.
“You activated Code Black,” Richard said.
“You forged a court order and removed Lily.”
“I was protecting her.”
“From whom?”
Richard looked toward Eleanor.
“She knows.”
Eleanor stepped into the room.
“For three years, you told me Claire was dead.”
“She was supposed to be.”
Arthur moved closer.
“What does that mean?”
Richard removed the portable drive.
“The accident was not designed to kill her. It was designed to make the world believe she was dead.”
“Who designed it?”
Richard’s expression tightened.
“You still think this is about the trust.”
“What is it about?”
“The trust is only the door.”
“To what?”
Richard laughed without humor.
“Claire discovered what your father placed beneath Meridian. Accounts, identities, operations that never officially existed.”
Arthur’s father had founded the first version of Meridian during the final years of the Cold War. Arthur had rebuilt it as a lawful private protection company after discovering widespread corruption inside the old organization.
He had believed the hidden files were destroyed.
Richard held up the drive.
“Claire found the remaining access key. She divided it into two parts.”
“One with her,” Arthur said.
Richard looked toward Lily.
“One with the child.”
Arthur stepped between him and the doorway.
“You used Lily to find it.”
“We asked her questions.”
“You made her believe her father abandoned her.”
“I did what I was ordered to do.”
“By Claire?”
Richard’s confidence disappeared.
A red light began flashing on the server wall.
Mara checked her device.
“Someone is wiping the system remotely.”
Richard looked genuinely afraid.
“She knows you activated Code Black.”
“Who?”
The portable drive in his hand became hot. He dropped it as smoke rose from its casing.
The lights went out.
A speaker hidden in the ceiling clicked on.
A woman’s voice filled the room.
“Arthur, take Lily and leave.”
He knew the voice.
Claire.
Lily looked up.
“Mom?”
Arthur stared into the darkness.
“Where are you?”
“You were not supposed to find this place yet.”
Richard moved toward the exit.
A steel security shutter dropped across the doorway, trapping him inside.
Claire’s voice continued.
“Richard failed. Eleanor remembered too much. The next team will not make the same mistakes.”
Arthur held Lily close.
“Are you threatening our daughter?”
“I am trying to keep her alive.”
“Then show yourself.”
A camera above the server wall rotated toward them.
“Not until you understand what Code Black truly protects.”
The emergency lights returned.
Richard was gone.
A panel beside the desk stood open, revealing a narrow escape tunnel.
On the floor lay the damaged recorder.
Mara picked it up.
“The internal memory might still be intact.”
Arthur looked at the camera.
“Claire, listen to me.”
The speaker remained silent.
“If you are alive, you have one chance to explain why you allowed Lily to be used.”
The camera lens moved toward Lily.
Then Claire whispered, “Because the person giving Richard orders was standing beside you.”
The connection ended.
Arthur turned.

Only Mara, Eleanor and the two child protection officers stood in the room.
One of them slowly reached inside his jacket.
