Chapter 6 - the hearing built on lies

The emergency custody hearing took place in a private chamber at the county courthouse.
Richard arrived with Lily, Eleanor, Dr. Reed and three attorneys.
Arthur arrived with Mara, Daniel and enough digital evidence to create suspicion, but not enough to destroy the order immediately.
Lily sat beside a court-appointed child advocate. She looked small in the large wooden chair, yet when Arthur entered, she straightened.
Richard noticed.
The judge reviewed the filings.
“Mr. Vale, you dispute the emergency guardianship?”
“Completely,” Daniel answered.
The judge looked at Arthur.
“Your work requires extended international travel.”
“It requires travel,” Arthur said. “It does not prevent me from parenting my daughter.”
“According to the filing, you failed to contact her for five consecutive days.”
“I called every day. The calls were blocked.”
Richard’s attorney presented telephone records showing no contact.
Mara handed Daniel a device report.
“The records were filtered through a private household server,” Daniel said. “Original data shows seventeen attempted calls.”
The judge compared the documents.
Richard looked toward Dr. Reed.
Reed avoided his eyes.
The child advocate spoke.
“Lily has asked to speak.”
The judge turned to her.
“You do not have to answer any question that makes you uncomfortable.”
Lily nodded.
“Where do you feel safest?” the judge asked.
“With my dad.”
Richard’s attorney stood.
“The child has been coached.”
Lily looked at him.
“Richard coached me.”
The room became silent.
The judge leaned forward.
“What did he ask you to say?”
“That Dad scares me. That he doesn’t call. That I want to live at the mansion.”
“Are those statements true?”
“No.”
Richard stood suddenly.
“She is confused.”
The judge’s expression hardened.
“Sit down.”
Richard obeyed.
Lily continued.
“He made me practice in the blue room. A woman told him what words I had to say.”
“Who was the woman?”
“I couldn’t see her.”
“Did you recognize her voice?”
Lily looked at Arthur.
“It sounded like my mom.”
The judge paused.
Daniel whispered to Arthur, “Do not react.”
Arthur kept his hands flat on the table.
Richard’s attorney recovered first.
“Lily’s mother died three years ago. This statement demonstrates emotional instability.”
Arthur turned toward him.
The attorney stopped speaking.
Dr. Reed was called forward.
He confirmed signing the evaluation but claimed he had relied on notes provided by Richard. Under questioning, he admitted he had not conducted a formal psychological examination of Lily.
The judge’s patience disappeared.
“Then why does the report say you personally evaluated her for ninety minutes?”
Reed looked toward Richard.
“I was told the language was standard.”
“By whom?”
“My office prepared it.”
“Who in your office?”
Reed hesitated.
Richard’s face warned him to remain silent.
Before he could answer, a court officer entered and handed the judge a message.
The judge read it twice.
“There has been an allegation that Mr. Vale attempted to access sealed evidence before this hearing.”
Richard’s attorney presented security footage from the mansion. It showed a man resembling Arthur entering the west greenhouse during the smoke incident.
The image was blurry but convincing.
Arthur knew he had been in the Meridian vehicle at that moment.
“That is not me,” he said.
Richard placed a damaged storage drive on the evidence table.
“This was found in Arthur’s car outside the estate.”
Mara immediately stood.
“No one searched his vehicle.”
“A sheriff’s deputy did after receiving a report.”
Daniel looked at Arthur.
The trap was larger than they had expected.
The damaged drive supposedly contained edited recordings of Lily’s voice. Richard’s attorneys argued that Arthur had created fake evidence to attack the guardianship case.
The judge ordered both sides to surrender their devices for forensic review.
Then she issued a temporary compromise.
Lily would not remain with Richard.
She would be moved to a neutral child protection residence for forty-eight hours while the evidence was examined. Arthur would receive supervised contact. Richard would receive none.
Lily began crying quietly.
Arthur crouched beside her before the officers escorted her away.
“This is temporary.”
“You said you were taking me home.”
“I am.”
“When?”
“Soon.”
“What if the woman finds me first?”
Arthur glanced toward the judge.
“What do you mean?”
Lily whispered, “She said every safe place belongs to her.”
A court officer approached.
Arthur touched Lily’s shoulder.
“No place belongs to someone who frightens you.”
Lily was escorted through a side door.
Richard passed Arthur near the exit.
“You should have taken the agreement,” he murmured.
Arthur stopped.
“What agreement?”
Richard smiled.
“The one Claire prepared before she died.”
Arthur grabbed his arm before thinking, then released him immediately.
Richard’s smile widened. Cameras near the hallway captured the moment.
“Thank you,” Richard said. “That will be useful.”
Mara stepped between them.
Richard walked away.
Daniel turned angrily toward Arthur.
“You cannot give him anything else.”
“He mentioned an agreement from Claire.”
“He wants you distracted.”
“It worked.”
Arthur looked through the courthouse doors as Richard joined Eleanor outside.
Eleanor pretended to stumble.
When Richard turned to help her, she dropped her handbag.
A folded envelope slid across the floor and stopped near Arthur’s shoe.
He picked it up before Richard noticed.
