Chapter 11 - the mother in the photograph

Richard was taken into federal custody.
The black folder contained photographs, coded account statements and a sealed letter addressed to Eleanor.
Arthur opened it with her permission.
Eleanor,
If you are reading this, Richard has failed to keep Arthur away from the truth. Do not blame him. He was promised safety for his children, and desperate fathers believe dangerous promises.
Lily must not remember the final verse.
Claire
Arthur read the letter aloud to Eleanor.
She sat in Meridian’s medical suite while doctors monitored the remaining effects of the sedative.
“What final verse?” Arthur asked.
Eleanor shook her head.
“Claire wrote dozens of songs.”
“Lily said you knew the one she sang in the blue room.”
“I knew part of it.”
“Who taught it to Claire?”
Eleanor looked toward the window.
“Your mother.”
Arthur felt the room become smaller.
“My mother died before Claire and I met.”
“She visited the Mercer estate several times under another name.”
“When?”
“After your father’s death.”
Arthur’s father had died twelve years earlier, shortly before Arthur rebuilt Meridian.
Eleanor continued.
“The woman called herself Victoria Hale. Claire trusted her because she knew details about your childhood no stranger could know.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Claire made me promise.”
“Claire is alive because everyone around me kept promises that placed Lily in danger.”
Eleanor closed her eyes.
“You are right.”
Mara entered with an old photograph found inside the black folder.
It showed three women standing on the Mercer estate balcony.
Eleanor was the first.
Claire was the second.
The third woman stood partly in shadow.
Arthur recognized her eyes.
They were his eyes.
On the back, Claire had written:
Three guardians. One betrayer.
Arthur placed the photograph on the table.
“Which one betrayed her?”
Eleanor stared at it.
“I don’t know.”
Richard agreed to speak in exchange for protective custody.
He claimed Claire contacted him two years after her apparent death. She warned him that the Lazarus network had identified Lily as the living key to the master index.
Claire asked Richard to obtain legal guardianship so Lily could be hidden from Arthur’s enemies.
“Why not tell me?” Arthur demanded.
“Claire said Meridian was compromised.”
“So you terrorized my daughter?”
“I was ordered to create emotional triggers.”
“By Claire?”
Richard hesitated.
“At first.”
“And later?”
“A second woman took control of the operation.”
“Arthur’s mother?”
“She never used a name.”
“What did she want?”
“The final verse.”
Arthur looked through the observation glass at Lily, who was drawing with Mara in the next room.
“Did you ever hear it?”
“No. Claire removed it from every recording.”
“What happens if Lily remembers?”
Richard leaned closer.
“The verse gives the physical location of the Lazarus master index.”
“Where?”
“That is the point. Only Lily knows.”
Arthur’s anger became colder.
“She is eight years old.”
“That is why Claire chose her. Adults can be bribed, watched or forced. A child can forget without pretending.”
Arthur stood.
Richard called after him.
“You think saving Lily means keeping her close. It doesn’t.”
Arthur turned.
“What does it mean?”
“It means making sure she never remembers what her mother taught her.”
That night, Arthur sat beside Lily until she fell asleep.
She had asked whether Claire was alive.
Arthur refused to lie.
“I think she may be.”
“Why didn’t she come home?”
“I don’t know.”
“Does she love me?”
“I believe she does.”
“Then why did she let Richard scare me?”
Arthur searched for an answer that would not place an adult’s failure on a child.
“Sometimes people convince themselves that a cruel plan is necessary because they are afraid of something worse. That does not make the cruel plan right.”
Lily considered this.
“Are you afraid?”
“Yes.”
“Of Mom?”
“Of losing you.”
She took his hand.
“You came when I called.”
“I always will.”
Lily began humming as her eyes closed.
Arthur recognized Claire’s song.
The melody continued beyond the verse he remembered.
Lily sang a new line in her sleep.
Under the house where no shadows remain, the first name waits beneath the rain.
The lights in the protected residence went out.

A red emergency symbol appeared on Arthur’s phone.
Lily’s bracelet had begun transmitting from two locations at once.
